Water Pressure Regulator

A little background. My motor took a dump at the end of last season. Fouling out plugs, oil spewing out of Raves and the front crankcase seal was gone. Oil spewing out of front of motor and stator housing.

That being said. I took the motor out and it is at FullBore at this moment getting rebuilt. On to the issue at hand. I noticed this last fall when I was taking the motor out. I know this is the water pressure regulator but don't know a whole lot about what it does or how it works. But I assume it's not normal to see evidence of water leaking out like this?

Ideas? Is this a sign of something else or as simple as just a new WPR? or just a by product of the motor taking a dump? I am really clueless...

water coming from the cap area or at the base? Either way, there should be NO water leaking from anywhere...

Hard to tell since i only noticed it after they motor was already out for a few weeks...but it appears to be coming from the base...

Oh and I'm sure this is a dumb question. But how does the bottom half of the housing come out of the muffler? I was afraid to twist or pull on it too much...

twist it off

That unit controls the flow to the pipe. When rpms increase, the WR decreases the flow to the pipe and diverts it into the muffler, when they go bad, it keeps dumping water to the pipe and the motor can not overcome the present water, thus, you have poor rpms at WOT.

Brendann is that rusted piece a clamp similar to the larger clean one at the bottom of the diaphram? If so then I think I found my problem. Mine is missing that smaller clamp all together. Does anyone have a similar picture of this same assembly as it is supposed to look?
