Just dropped the ski off to the Machanic

He said something about he just checked the needle
And pop off presure but didn't replace or play with it

So his going to pull the carbies off and re check everything

How much psi should the pop off be set at?

On the 787 engine what should the ski rev out of the water? He said mine was about 2200 - 2500

I said to him today I've been reading on forums it should be on around 3000 is that right ? Or is this guy right

According to the manual, this is for a 96XP which should be the same, same engine same carbs. as yours, the pop off should be 27-39.

The ski should idle out of the water at 3000 rpm, this is factory specs. from the service manual. This should translate to about 1500 rpm in the water. I actually set mine a little higher so I don't hear the rattle. It will probably idle lower, but it won't be too smooth.

Adding to my last post...When the aftermarket diaphrams are used they sometimes hold open the n&S. The little nipple on the diaphram is pink if its genuine.

Also...tell him to make SURE the accelerator pump on the carb is working correctly and the adjustment screw is still in place.

Lou...this set of carbs have an accelerator pump on them so the setup is slightly different, although I think the pop off is the same. The 97XP, and 98-99 SPX were the 800's had the accelerator pump.

i have told the machanic i want him to take it out make sure its absolutely running like a clock when you call me to pick it up.

once received ill report back to advise what the issue exactly was. i know alot of guys have one everything i have and still had some sort of bogging issue so hopefully it helps some members out.


on an off topic..... a 97 xp 787 motor va 99XP LTD with the 951 motor..... in the water that extra 20hp is it a veryy noticeble difference btween the 2 skis?

Anybody about the 787 vs 951 ? Difference in power, isn't really noticeable? Or will a 787 with a new solas, wear ring and fresh motor be close?

Update on ski: awaiting mechanic to re do carbies hopefully in next couple days and we will go out together to watertune it
 
This is just my opinion and like A-holes everybody has one. I would stay with the 787, it's much more reliable and close to the same performance. But yes you will see a difference in the performance between the 787 and the 951.

Take the shock seat out and install a aluminum rod in its place and you knock like 20lbs off of it and make it easier to throw around...
 
Yes, the 20 HP makes a HUGE difference... wanna race ;)?

I would not give up that shock, my butt can't take it!

seadoobuddy...the 97xp/xpl hulls have a shock under the seat. Racers take it out to lighten it up, as well as be able to man handle the machine. The shock eats up some of your energy you are using to get around corners.

Its like if you had a crotchrocket that had a shock between the seat and the footpegs.
 
Aha makes sense, the only reason why I ask is my brother in law has a xpl and when i ride that, it absolutely rips goes really well, I still to date haven't had a proper ride of mine since I've baught it so I'm hoping it goes close to the xpl

Can't wait until it's all resolved so i can finally enjoy it

Ok so I got the Ski back, I'm testing it in
A couple hours will let u guys know how it goes

The machanic said he re done the carbies
And changed the springs to Brown ones

What's a good ratio for
Premix guys? 50:1?
 
Technically 40:1 is the proper mix ratio, but I know a lot of guys use the 50:1 with no problems.

If you haven't disconnected your oil injection, I would recommend not to disconnect it. Its' a very reliable system because it get constant lubrication. If you maintain it properly, ie change the oil lines every few years, you wont have a problem.

If you have disconnected it be sure to leave the oil tank installed and the line to and return from the rotary valve gear connected.

Ok so tested the ski this is really becoming a nightmare...... The carbies got rebuilt again and checked over by two people just to make sure.

Got it back to the machanic just before and he said there's no way it's a carbs issue, the box with the coil pack was half full of water and few of the ground terminals coroded.

The water looked really old inside I'm thinking this has been there for a long time

I noticed when I took it ran great for a minute of so then I gave it full throttle and when I hit a wave it boged down again, I'm thinking the water is jumping up and down and causing the connection not to connect

What are your thaughts guys?
 
I'm betting the hull has been full of water, it would take a lot of water for the rear e-box to get water inside.

If your mechanic had discovered this problem earlier we would have gone a different direction. I would assume your mechanic would have at least removed the water from the rear e-box, but I guess he hasn't. Here's a parts diagram showing the rear e-box, I suspect that the gasket, part no. 6 is not sealing, that's about the only way water can get inside.

Basically what you are going to have to do is take the top of the box off, drain the water, clean all the connections, apply dielectric grease and re-assemble.
1. Disconnect and remove the battery.
2. Disconnect the spark plug leads, disconnect the power cables, as I recall the hardest part is disconnecting the pos. lead at the starter, you'll need to use a mirror to see it. There's small cable coming out of the boot at the top, that just plugs into a connector, and also a small ground wire that goes to the battery.
3. Remove the top cover, all the stuff inside will come out when you remove the cover, also check and see it the cover gasket is mis-aligned, I'll bet it is.

Probably the next step would be to inspect what damage has been done inside the box, at the minimum clean all the electrical connections and apply dielectric grease. Also inspect the coil, it it's been sitting in water it might need to be replaced. I'm kinda surprised you haven't had any starting problems. If you can post some pictures, the more the better.

Yeah I'll shoot some pics across getting married this Sunday then off to la and vagas for 3 weeks so fingers crossed it's fixed when I get back

The mechanic said henwill re wire it all and clean the box etc and put the contact grease on

So now knowing the carbies are all good, would water in the coil box cause the bogging? Not giving correct spark?

Yes, probably would have saved you a lot of aggravation and money if your mechanic had found this earlier. From the symptoms you described it sure sounded like the carbs.

I don't know how to tell you this but I'm afraid you're going to have to postpone your wedding and honeymoon, until after you get your SeaDoo fixed. Just ask yourself what's more important???

Anyway congratulations on your upcoming marriage and have a great time in Vegas.

Have him check/clean/grease every connecton (including MPEM...and be careful cuz if the pins started rotting and one breaks off thats it)...clip the plug wires 1/4" too.

If the carbs had different springs than the black (there arent any browns so I assume thats what he meant) that was wrong....so it needed to be redone anyways.
 
Ok guys back from holiday took the ski out yesterday

I was once again getting ready for andisappontment but it WORKED! I'm so happy

The problem: cleaned all wiering
And put electrical contact on them and cleaned all corrosion from coil pack and the thing runs
Like a dream! Had a go with my mates xp ltd and kept right next to him Which was suprising

My throttle got jammed whilst ridding and after inspection realised it ha some slits in it, so to replace it do I need to tension or adjust anything or is it just bolt on? Don't really want to visit the makanik again
