So I finally got to take the 2008 RXPX out for my first ride. I really like it, a little heavy, but crazy quick out of the hole! After spending a little time on it yesterday I started to wonder about a few things.

First, it got to 70mph on the speedo pretty easily. I am not implying that 70mph is accurate, but I have read that these speedo's will not register anything more than 70 even if the boat has more speed after that mark. is this true?


Secondly, I stumbled onto something about the USCG putting a cap at 68 mph. How did they accomplish this? Is it with GPS, or from a mechanical speedometer & speed limit programing?

If this is truly something that is in force, what model year did that start? While I don't believe my 2008 has such a device, I am pretty sure 68-70 is about all its capable in stock form anyway correct?

Don't get me wrong, I am not down playing the speed. the thing is wicked quick. Just trying to learn a little more about it.

Well, I can confirm one thing.... I used air pressure to spin the speed sensor, 70 MPH is all it will show no matter how fast it spins.

Your 08 is not limited to 68. I don't think they started that till the iBR system came out.

I didn't think it was in 2008 because of all the skis getting modded & pulling well into the 70's. When did the 68mph limit happen?

I wonder why seadoo decided to make the speedo stop reading after 70. seems odd seeing its a digital system.

No idea why they did that. There was a few that stopped reading at 69mph. Couldn't tell you why. I think they started limiting them when they got powerful enough to reach into the 70s stock. So figure around 2010 or so when all manufacturers put limiters on.

Is this something the CanDoo can help with??? Could this be where a handheld gps comes in handy??

I'm not sure if the CanDoo will actually change or remove the limiter. I know there's aftermarket plug in modules that trick the limiter and allow you to exceed 68mph. Also the Riva Athena ECU does away with that.

CanDoo won't do it (man, hard to resist a bad pun there). Something called an SCOM is used on icontrol models to essentially bypass the GPS governor.

However, you'll likely need a tune. Something we'll have soon with VTech (athena works with icontrol models). For the speedo, it all has to do with appeasing the USCG.

Agreed. The best plan of action is to go straight for the reflash tune. The SCOM will not remove the other limiters (boost, rpm, etc.) and is essentially a waste of money.
