Throttle not hooked up right?

Hey I just bought a 96 Challenger with a 787 i think. I took her out on the water yesterday first time and when I put it in forward the throttle only allows me to push it an inch. In neutral and reverse I can do full throttle. Seems like something is hooked up backwards but wanted comments before I start tearing stuff up.

Also it was supposedly rebuilt 7 months ago and never put in the water. So that leads me to think the mechanic just hooked something up wrong and the previous owner did not realize it.

Thanks for any help with this. I am itching to get on the water and 5mph is all I got with 1/8 of the throttle :)

There are just a few screws in the plate covering the shifter and throttle. I would take that off and remove the screws and lift it up just to check and make sure nothing is tangled up or obstructed.

Thanks! It was not screwed down when I got the boat and I looked at it and screwed it down. Nothing appeared to be tangles or bent.

Is the throttle supposed to be limited in reverse?

Still no luck I need some help

I pulled the throttle out and it appears theres some sort of spring or something that engages when I move it from neutral to the forward position that locks the throttle from moving more than 1/2 inch forward.

I checked all the cables and they look fine its someting withint the control mechanism that is putting a stop to me going forward. Is there some sort of throttle stop adjustment within the controls? Its not the throttle cable because I took it off and the controls still lock.

I am afraid to take it all the way apart and springs or bearings might fall out...

If someone can give me some advice on this I would really apreciate it!

Ok if no one can tell me how to fix this. Can someone tell me where I can buy a new set of controls. I assume something is just wrong with this set and hopefully a new one will not have the same problems.

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry no one has talked to you on this... but it's an unusual issue.

OK... on my controls, no... if it's in neutral, or reverse, my throttle still goes to the top. But... I can not shift unless it's at, or near idle. That lock out mechanism is holding your throttle. (not what it's suppose to do)

Since it's already messed up... then what's the harm in disassembling it the entire way? I bet if you do... something will show it self as being wrong.

The controls are made by Teleflex. I'm sure if you check their website... you can download the exploded view of the control handles.
