Hey guys...since i bought my 97 sportster the gas gauge hasn't been working. I shorted the gauge side of the plug and the gauge went to full so I know the wiring from there up and the gauge are good. I also replaced the float with a brand new aftermarket float and I am still getting no resistance from it. What could be my problem? Also when I replaced the OEM float, the 4 magnets looked to be in good shape and it would float just fine. Any suggestions on what it could be? Thanks

I remember doing this to my 95 gtx, there is only magnets to glue back on with epoxy because silicone dissolves and there is a fuse somewhere near the top, just solder a wire there and put a 2amp fuse in the wire outside the tank so you can replace it - I never have had it poop out yet.

Ok I just did some tests and it is definitely the baffle with the circuit board and 2 wires coming out of it. Is there a way I can fix this or do I need to buy a new baffle? It must be the fuse you speak of inside the baffle. How can I get at this? Thanks

Well I ended up answering all my questions myself by doing a search on the forum :D. I needed to take out the f1 fuse and solder it and now my gauge works flawlessly. For anybody reading this thread that has the same problem, here is the link that told me everything:

I have one last question though before I put it all back together. Is there any risk of fire now that I took out the bad f1 fuse and just soldered across it? There must be a reason why BRP put that fuse there in the first place right?

Yes... if the system shorts out, you will burn up the gauge. I would replace it with a fuse.

Ok so I will just place a 250 mA fuse in the wiring before the gauge. Is there any risk of fire in the baffle though because of the solder I put on the circuit board? I guess not since the board was already in there....just seems like a bad place to put something electrical lol.
