1996 Seadoo XP Multifunction Gauge- Good or Bad?

Hi everyone,

I know there is tons of posts about this but hopefully someone can answer this for me. My gauge lights up but no fuel level bars light up in the screen. I’ve confirmed the gauge gets voltage and my wiring seems good, and ohms readings from the fuel baffle wires are seeming to be in spec. Everything is pointing twards the gauge being faulty. When I press the start/stop button the lights on the gauge stay on and don’t turn off. Same for if the key is on. I’ve attached an Image to show what’s going on. Before I spend any money on a new gauge just wanted to see hear yalls thoughts and ideas.

Thanks,
-Yellow Banana 787

Also I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it but the ski has no vts (been deleted by previous person) and the speedo is non operational (I plan on fixing with a gps unit) also oil injection is deleted.

It sounds like you checked everything external to the gauge and the wires check out. Does the ski run? I have a 96
GTX but I think the modules should behave similarly. It should be described in the shop manual. Mine lights things up for about 30 seconds if the start key is pressed without the key on the post. The red lights come on and the fuel bars are all on and then it will display the true fuel level and only red lights that show a true warning, It will then shut off if the ski is not started. Same with the key on if the ski is not started I think. If yours does not shut off without the ski running then I would wonder why the MPEM is still supplying power to the gauge.

I took my gauge apart to replace the polarizing film on the display that was sun burnt. Inside there appears to be a processing unit to drive the displays with pin connections between the 2 boards. If no one gives you any more recommendations and you are going to replace the gauge you could try opening the gauge first to see if there is internal corrosion on connections that can be cleaned up that may be interfering with the gauge operation.

Yes the ski runs. I have a pdf of a shop manual but it seems to be pretty generic it covers multiple models from that year. However it does have useful information. I also have a complete wiring diagram. I will have to open it up and check before I buy a new one. eBay has some that are working as they should for less than 100 bucks so if all else fails I’ll just buy a working one. I’ll check and see how long the lights stay on and compare it to what you said. Thanks for the advice!

I feel like the only warning light that would stay on after the lights turn off would be the battery light just because the ski isn’t running, kinda like how it stays on in a car when it’s just in accessory mode- like telling you it’s not charging.

Update: mine lighted up for about 30 seconds, and because the ski wasn't on. They turned off just like you said. Did the same thing with the key also. That now leads me to think it is the film, as you mentioned. Do you have any ideas on products or where to buy a kit to replace the film?

I've seen kits on ebay. The instructions on how to do it can be found on youtube or will come with the kit. I did mine years ago. I bought an apple oem polarizing film for an older model iphone because I did not see any complaints of iphones displays burning up from sun exposure. It was only a few dollars because the iphone was not a current model. I cut a piece to fit the seadoo lcd screen. It's been fine ever since.

I had cut the chrome ring on that seals the display bezel on the gauge. You may find a way to pry up the edge of the ring to get it off witch will make reattaching and sealing the bezel easier. I had sealed mine with clear silicon and used a large hose clamp to hold it in place while it dried. I then put some silicon on the slit where I cut the chrome ring. The display has not fogged since and it has been rained on (but not flipped over).

That's a good idea, never thought of that. I just found an iPhone 5 polarizer film, do u think that would be fine? I saw a video where they pried up the edge, so ill prob do that.
