Well, luckily, I ran the first tank this season with 50:1 premix. I got into the engine bay and wanted to double-check the allignment on the oil injection pump, and VOILA!!! it was set at about 10-o'clock too lean.

So I set it to about 1-o'clock rich, and will run another tank premixed and see how much it uses. Might run WAY too rich now, but I can lean out the oil pre-mixture by topping off the tank later on.

I have 2 sets of carbs. I clean and rebuild one set during winter, and install them after I pull the boat out of storage. Apparently, the clamp where you hook up the adjusting screw for the oil injector pump is not the same on the two sets of carbs, and when I swapped them out this spring, it dropped the oil injector setting to a bit lean.

The moral of this story, children, is to double check all your settings at the beginning of each season. :hat:

got lucky, my brutha

goin back to rfosters' post, about his guestimate usage, is it still feasable, to run injection...?

I use to be anti-oil-injection guy. But honistly... if you are poking your head in the engine compartment, and you verify proper function from time to time... it's nice to have.

If the injection works AT ALL, I will keep it installed. I have a feeling I will be premixing to some extent from here on out.

I just don't trust the injection system.

Too easy to forget something simple like this adjustment, or a filter gets clogged, and shot engine.

I may eventually just go straight block off and premix. So I KNOW what I have getting in there.

Especially now that I found $19/gal oil :hurray:

Can't wait til I have room to store a 4-stroke.

This is good, so are you guys saying that I should have premixed my gasoline before taking it out?

Would it hurt the engine? Also, if my oil lines were bad, can I just keep doing what this gentleman does to make sure that my engine doesnt ever blow up again?

Thanks!

i just picked up a 99 sportster could you point me to that adjument screw so I could check it :)
How do I check that oil pump is working?? i know they say to draw line on tank but is there a way to test its pumping so I dont run w/o oil on first test run??

Not sure about your 99 sportster, but if it is set up like mine, there is a cable coming from the carb linkage to the oil pump at the front of the engine. There is a line etched into the rotating pump cam, and one on the pump. At idle, with the slack taken out of the throttle cable, those lines should line up straight up at the top.

The adjustment is just like a motorcycle clutch or brake, or a bicycle. Loosen a screw on one side of the bracket, and tighten the other in whichever way you need to to make those lines line up.

It is not easy to see, and you will likely need a mirror to put in front of the engine so you can see the lines and the pump.

And NO! If your lines are shot, you need to either replace them or use a blockoff kit. Otherwise those lines will leak oil into the hull and let air into the carbs causing a lean condition.

I just ran premix for the first tank until I verified that all was running well. Which it wasnt.

Oops thanks for info.
Just saw in avatar your single engine but oil injection should be the same just x2.

Lines look in tack. Just wish there was a way to check pump is working?
Can you here it?

What happened?

Check plugs

Checking spark plugs on a 2 stroke tells alot of whats going on inside the engine. This site has excellent reading that should inform,I`m an oil injection guy, seadoo` system works well.

Seadoosnipe recently posted how to check your injection system flow.

I am doing it the hard way. Do a search with his name and see if you can find his way to do it. It was recent, like in the past month or two.
