so i have a 1994 sea doo spi 580 and i find my self takin on water thank god for bilge pumps. But when the PWC just sits in the water it takes on water. I have no idea where it's coming in. I usually get about 3 or 4 gallons when i pump it out at home it gets like 1/4 of the way up the battery. (If your fimilar with the PWC it's high) any ideas?

When you get home try filling the hull with water, (not too much), and see if you can tell where the water is leaking out. Check extra close where the drive shaft goes through the hull and where the pump attaches to the hull. If not there you could have a crack in the hull.

Thanx Lou i think it may be the drive shaft seal. But it seams hard to change is it? What about aligning the shaft after I some how pull it apart. And how do I get it out?

It's not that hard of a job, but it will take some time. You'll need to remove the pump, and drive shaft, and replace the thru-hull fitting. You may need to replace the seal carrier, etc., it would also be a good time to check the wear ring and impeller.

You will need a manual, if you join as a premium you can download them from this forum.

Alignment shouldn't be a problem since you are only removing the pump and not the motor.

Also check your sponsons to see if one is loose,I had this on my 1994 gtx (one was loose) and a buddy helped me sink the back end and we could hear the water comming in through the bolt holes.

Its either the driveshaft seal (not likely as its the good old style), the sponsons being loose, or one of your freeze plugs on the pipe is rotten and spraying. Take it to the water and leave it strapped to the trailer and fire it up and gun it a few times...you should see where the problem is if you are getting that much water in there.

More than likely, its the plugs on the underside of the exhaust. I just finished welding mine up. My ski would fill to the top in a matter of minutes. Also like mentioned before, check the sponsoons and the ride plates.

Does your ski fill with water while its sitting, or when its running? When you say 1/2hr to go 1/4 up the battery, is that running, if so are you running full speed?

We're back to looking and either the drive shaft seal, or the sponsons, water coming in at or through the pump, or a hull leak. I think we can rule out the exhaust pipe, etc. since it leaks when the ski is not running.

I just checked the shop manual, there is a gasket between the sponson and the hull, good luck finding one.

I would just check to see if they are loose, if they are tight to the hull, its probably not the source of the leak. If they are loose, I would take them off and use silicone seal, like form a gasket, to seal them back to the hull.

I think it's the Bailers... On the transom right above the Jet Pump You will see three hoses, One supplies the Motor with cooling water.
It is larger and it comes from the high presher side of the Pump.
The other two go to the low presher part of the pump, creating a suction. These will go to the Bilge or the bottom of the engine compartment. The hoses for the bailers have to be routed up above the water line or water will come right back in from the pump when the pump is not running.

I don't know what the gasket material is, I have never taken the sponsons off. If they are loose just tighten them up and see if the leak is fixed.

If the sponsons are tight to the hull, then that's probably not your problem.

Yep... what he said.

But... look in the nozzle of the jet pump. you should see 2 pipes hanging down from the top, and facing back. If one (or both) fell out... it will pump water into the ski.

I didn't know that, great tip

Lets go back to the beginning. While on the trailer, did you partially fill the hull with water and look to see if and where water was leaking out???
