Supercharger went again...

OK, 08 Speedster 150. When the boat was new with about 10-11 hours on it, the supercharger washers went. It was repaired under warranty and all seemed well. Today, with only 45 hours on it, we were cruising along at about 40-45 when the supercharger started whining extremely loud. I let off the throttle and you could just hear it was much louder than it should be at idle. Turned around to try to limp it back and about 500' later, the rpms just kept dropping and dropping until it locked up and stalled. It is seized and will not even crank over. What in the supercharger assembly could lock up the motor? I am worried at this point that there is going to be motor damage as well as the oil looked to have aluminum shavings in it, assuming it's from the housing or something, haven't taken it apart yet.

I am furious at this POS, it cost way too much money to be having problems like this with only 45 hours on it. The sea tow guy said "I tow way too many of these things, I think it's about time to unload it and buy a real boat" lol. I have been getting the itch to buy a 24' Baja lately and this isn't helping matters lol.

Sounds like bearing let go. Ill buy this off yah if your looking to unload it ill pay top dollar too. Your observation on the oil is looking bad, there's probably ball bearings in the lower case, I've seen it before it isn't pretty. You could try to get brp to cover it but that probably won't go very far ... worth a shot though. Anyways, again if your looking to unload I would take it. Shoot me a pm ... we'll figure somthing out.

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify, it wasn't a motor bearing that went bad, it was certainly supercharger related. I am just concerned with further bearing damage due to the metal in the oil from the supercharger.

I will keep you posted about what I decide to do, but to be honest, I will more than likely do the needed repairs prior to selling it if it comes down to that. I am just pretty frustrated right now. Had my wife and 4 year old out when it broke, had to jump in the water to swim to a bridge pillar to tie the boat off so we didn't blow too far away and cut the hell out of my hand on barnacles climbing said pillar . To top it off, it started storming before sea tow got us, so we got stuck in winds and rain waiting. My son was scared, we were drenched and my hand was bleeding. Not very happy with this boat right now .

Yah there's bearings on the supercharger shaft (those are the ones I'm referring too), I had a bearing blow apart 15hrs after a compelete rebuild. Your definately into splitting the cases and cleaning all the metal out ... For what its worth I feel your pain ... I would've have got the wifey n kids to shore ... floated it out to the middle of the lake and sunk the bitch! I've been in a situation similar to that before ... Hear yah!

Haha, the bridge we tied to was the highway, there were stairs not too far from us. I was so tempted to just leave it there, climb up and have a friend come and pick us up.. ugh. I figured the motor would have to come apart. I hear others say don't bother, the filter will catch it. But I don't feel safe with that...

i think i'd look into filing a claim for this. BRP should cover this and take care of its customers. 45 hours on a boat is barely a summer. I think i'd have sunk it as well. LOL Good luck man.

I have not called BRP as of yet, just spoke with a couple of dealers who pretty much laughed and said "you are almost 4 years out of warranty, they won't do anything". I agree though, 45 hours on an 08 is NOTHING for time. I always joke that it is pretty sad that my 2010 lawn tractor has more hours on it than my 08 boat does. Kind of depressing lol.

It's hard to get BRP to do warranty when they're in warranty. I think you are going to be SOL. The problem is... if you had a failure in 08... then they replaced the washers with ceramic units. When the problem came to light... you should have had steel washers put in.

AFAIK, they did replace the ceramic washers with steel- at least that's what they told me they did. It's ok, I really enjoy the boat, but BRP saw the last of my dollars. These boats are way overpriced for the quality, at least from my experience- and I did realize early on that getting warranty work done on this boat when it was under warranty was like pulling teeth... Far from worth what they go for new IMHO. I can buy my used 454 powered 24' Baja that I've been wanting for far less . Wife is almost about to approve, this breakdown really helped my case lmao....

Unfortunately... you are right. I am a fan of Seadoo... but I'm not a die hard "Seadoo Only" kind of guy. And... all of my toys are older, and were projects. (so they were bought cheap) I have a hard time justifying the price of the new boats and skis... especially since my boating season is only 5 months long. (and that's pushing it)


Well.... if you find out exactly what happened... let us know.

If you were closer to Pitt... I would say to bring it to my shop, so you could get an honest opinion of the damage.

With your description... hopefully it's just the pump bearings that went bad. If that's the problem... it's an easy fix. You could try to remove the pump, and driveshaft... and then see if the engine will start.

Pump bearings are good, already removed it for the hell of it to check. It was certainly in the supercharger, sounded just like any other supercharger taking a crap .

Just figured I'd update this. It was the rear bearing that went, causing the shaft to kick to the side and destroy the compressor wheel and cover, made a mess of the gear on the crank and sent aluminum through the intake and other aluminum into the oil. The cylinders looked good with a scope and I hope the filter caught the stuff in the oil before doing any bottom end damage, but I pulled the motor the other day and plan on tearing it down to inspect it to be safe.
