Hi everyone, Im looking at a 2005 sportster with the 215hp 4 tec motor. Dont know the hours on boat, it does have the wake tower so its pulled some skiis.
Do these motors have a good or bad reputation for reliability/longevity? I know anything will last longer if you take care of but, I heard some older SC motors and even new 300hp Kawis jet skiis are not good on reliability.....
Thx all....Brian.

Generally speaking, very good motors.

The 03/04 SC's had a different design SC as compared to the 05 to the 08. The 05 to 08 had ceramic washers which are a known issue. They become brittle and flake apart. These parts fall into the engine and destroy the motor. 09 is when they went to metal washers, that said, some 09's ended up with ceramic washers.

Don't let this scare you, they simply need rebuilt every 100 hours.I would guess you are in that area in not more based on the year.
Do NOT buy the boat without a water test, not a hose test, but a quality water test. Do NOT buy it without doing a compression test. Post your results here and we can tell you MUCH more.

The 4-tec engines are great. Super easy. Put gas in one hole and make sure there is oil in the engine. It really is that simple...

^x2.... Hours are crucial. And paperwork speaks louder than a seller's claims. You can say it was rebuilt all you want. No paper- not rebuilt.

You might want to ask this in the SeaDoo Boats forum, instead of the PWC forum. It's a boat.... you'll get more and more accurrate responses in the correct forum.
