Storage door above steering wheel won't stay in the upright position

The door to the storage compartment behind the steering wheel won't stay up. I can position it in the 'open' position, but if you look at it crossways or breathe on it, it comes crashing down.

How can I adjust it to stay up?

You probably need a new lift.
Google it or look at a good auto parts store. Seadoo charges an outrageous price for them.
Someone else just had a thread about a lift, can't remember which one. Maybe you can search for it.

What is a lift? You mean like those 'gas shocks' on car hoods? The mechanism that holds this cockpit open is just a piece of metal with a bend in it.... zoom in on the photo.

I zoomed in as best I could. It looks like a telescoping rod.

Maybe you could fasten a gas shock to the hood and bucket bin.

Wups, that is a telescoping rod in the background but its not part of the storage door!~

the part at the bottom of the door, with the 4 bolt heads is the mechanism that holds the door up.

OK...LOL on my part.
I don't have a boat bin like that so I'm just guessing here....can you unbolt it or take the bin out and look to see if there are any springs involved?

You can try sending minnetonka4me or 99spxxx a message & ask if they has a newer latch/hinge for it.

OK after what Lou said, forget about getting a used one.
Would a new latch/hinge from a newer boat work? They could be a different design??? :)

Hey Texas,

My 96GTI is a similar design (or should I say lack of design), the only thing that keeps the lid from crashing down is a clip. This is a really bad design, I damn near lost a thumb last summer.

I don't have a solution but if you or anyone else comes up with something please let me know. I do know that some of the newer models have a gas shock, like for a hatchback window, but I'm not sure how you would mount it. I had an old car I used to keep a piece of a broom handle under the hood to prop it open.:banghead:

I'm afraid that's all I got.

I normally have a towel in the bucket to keep things from bouncing around too much. I put it in the hinge point, and it helps hold it up. It's a crap design.

I took a pair of pliers and gently bent the metal piece so that it firmly kept the door open. Shook it and tapped it and it stayed open. Shut it. When I re-opened it, it went right back to being quick and easy to fall shut. Sigh.

Tex,

I was thinking about this when I was walking the dogs this morning. I'm glad you brought this up because I've been thinking about a solution. Here's what I've come up with so far (it's all in my mind right now).

As I said earlier my 96GTI is similar. I'm thinking or attaching an aluminum pole made out of square tubing, to a hinge in the top hood that would swing down when you open the hood. I happen to have a drain in the bin, I sometimes have been known to keep adult beverages in there. I'm thinking the pole could rest in the drain, or you could just put a rubber bumper on the end.

My 96GTI is in my sister's garage right now, but as soon as I bring it home I'm going to work on it, I'll let you know what I come up with and I'll post some pictures. I skinned up my thumb pretty good last year when the hood slammed shut, it needs fixing, the hood not my thumb.

Lou
