starting a carbureted engine

I was wondering what is the proper way to start one of these SeaDoo engines after its been sitting around awhile? Is there a secret to starting a carbureted engine? How do I prime the engine before I start it?

Depending on what engine and year... turn on the fuel, pull the choke, and hit the starter.

If you have an engine with an accelerator pump on the carb, then you can squeeze the throttle a few times to help start it quicker.

No real trick.

Ok. what if it cranks and is being stubborn? Would you recommend spraying engine started in carbs? Any trick to helping it start then?

Not sure what you mean here, but if you are referring to using "starting fluid" spray, I personally would not recommend it. It does not have lubrication protection like 2 strokes need and is generally just hard on your engine. Check the basics (spark, fuel, compression, etc) to see why it does not want to start if you are having real issues getting it running. Check the color of your plugs too, if they are black and fouled, clean them off with starting fluid or carb spray cleaner and keep trying. :cheers:

If you want to you could also add some Premixed fuel, about a tea spoon amount in each cylinder, using the same oil you normally use. Add it into the spark plug holes to help kick start the engine. Starting fluid is never a good idea in a 2 stroke.

I only use starter fluid to get a wet, or oil flooded engine started. I don't recommend using it as a regular starting aid.

If your engine won't start after a few seconds of cranking... there are other problems. I would first check compression. If it's above 135 psi... then I would go though the fuel system, and clean the carbs.

You can take out the choke, and replace it with a primer, but it should start using the choke.
