starter issue

hey guys, another problem, when i was trying to start after replacing the jet pump and starting for the first time in a few weeks, the starter was a little slow. then eventually, it just heard one click when i hit the start button and i have already done a few things. 1. battery is fully charged. 2. there is always 12 volts of power from the battery to the far side of the solenoid, but the starter side of the solenoid only gets power when i press the starter. i have been reading multiple things but a lot of them say different things, but im leaning towards the starter since the solenoid seems to me to be doing its job. any help would be very appreciated. Thanks guys.

Sounds like it could be your battery. I would suggest taking it to your local auto parts store and have it load tested.

Oh, ok. I just seen you mention 12v and they seemed a little low. What are the volts of the battery at rest, and volts while cranking?

its 12.87 when just sitting to the solenoid part connected to the battery, and the when trying to start the wire connected to the starter gets 12.87 volts

ok, one part i will say is when i was cranking it before it went it was smoking a tiny bit after which i did not notice until it just started to click. but i will test the voltage if i can reach it tomorrow, but does it smoking tell you anything

Probably time for a new starter

so I ended up getting a new starter because i do not have any experience nor do i know anyone with experience with rebuilding starters. I am trying to get it mounted but it does not seem to be going all the way in. it goes in a little past the second o ring, is that normal?

No, what I should have said is all the measurements are the same and it is just getting a little stuck, but the bracket fits on I just need help getting it in all the way

If everything is correct there really shouldn't be anything for it to get stuck on. Make sure you grease the snout and it should push in with minimal force.

maybe this is a stupid question but, you stated this started after replacing the jet pump. did the impeller spin freely before you put it in or was there any resistance? I have rebuilt a lot of pumps and sometimes for some reason when I put the cone back on it creates too much resistance and when that happens the starter will have a hard time turning it over.

The newer cones have a “pusher” that has to be held in the released position with a pencil while tightening the bolts or it will bind and not allow the impeller shaft to rotate.

Just had mine doing the same thing. hit start button and one click from solenoid. It ended up being the starter bendix. replaced starter problem gone. 787 rfi . was able to get it out without removing anything.

this is usually a problem with the original ones that don't have the spring or "pusher", I have to grind them down a little bit to make it work.
