I pulled the 720 from the Sportster I bought a few years ago, intending to do a full rebuild.
When I pulled the heads and saw the very pristine cylinder walls, piston tops (light black carbon only) and heads, I stopped.
Expecting the worst, I never checked compression before the pull.
With the carbs on, no exhaust manifold, cold, on the bench, I'm getting 135-140 on each cylinder.
Here's the question: Would anything be gained power-wise to do the top end?
I thought the engine was weak, but have since learned that 650's were pretty underpowerd for this boat.
I'm thinking it probably is what it is, and I should just finish the carb kits and slap it back together.
Looking for experienced opinions.
Thanks in advance!
