SPI Carb problem?

Hello everyone,

I just purchased a 96 SPI 580 from a firend he took outstanding care of it but it has sat for 3years. I got it running after MPEM, Battery, Plugs and a few other random things. I have been chasing what I believe is a fuel supply problem. This is the first Ski I have ever owned, however I am very handy with mechanical things but only on the automotive side so far.

The Ski idles fine and even revs great in my driveway  But when I get it in the water I can only idle. when I give it gas it takes off for about 5 second and falls on it face. I believe it is using up fuel in line then starving out? I cleaned out the filter, bypassed the selector switch because it was clogged, cleaned all the lines that are still in use. I really don't get it becasue I took it out and had it running great for about 20 min then it starting having this problem. I have tried everything I can think of. I am asuming I need to rebuild Carb now. any other ideas?

volt test the battery, while holding around 5500rpm. Should read anywhere between 13.5-14.5. If higher/lower, need to replace the rectifier.

Is 5500 around full throttle? I don't have a gauge. Why would not getting fuel be the battery? I replaced battery its brand new

They run erratically when the rectifier isnt working correctly.

I would be tearing into that carb. If your selector switch was clogged, I can imagine what the filter in the carb looks like. Clean it before lean seize it.

If all you did was clean, and not replace your fuel lines....you need to replace them. Just google "grey tempo fuel lines"

Def agree... I have an article in my "snipes korner" with pictures that show that goo that is created in the tempo lines. Also, like stated, this junk is inside your carb. When the tempo line begins to dissolve, its kinda like syrup and able to pass through filters. Once the motor shuts down, the goo solidifies. This stuff can stop up the jets, the needle assembly, the bottom end of the diaphragm. The small white mesh filter may well be in bad shape too. This is a fine mesh material and hard to clean. But, cleaning the carbs is a must......

Thanks for the help! I am going to replace fuel lines tonight and tearing into the carb. Where is the screen inside the carb on the fuel inlet I am guessing?

yup...since its a single carb I would just buy a OEM rebuild kit and a needle and seat. Then you can be assured the carb is in the best condition it can be.

I take the fuel system out all in one piece with the selector and fuel/water seperator and clean the parts up and change the lines. then I put it back in all in one piece.

Yes it will not be hard I have already had the whole thing apart once minus the carb. I just bypassed the selector because it was leaking after I cleaned it out becasue those lines do seal well once removed.

Well I took it off the inlet and return on carb was gummed up just like the selector switch. I broke the Pulse fitting off the carb trying to removing the pulse hose:redface: I blew the Carb out with cleaner and air. I am hoping the parts store has that cover with fitting for my carb.

I have one for $15 shipped if you cant find one...as long as its the pulse and not one of the other two.

Thank You, I ended up getting one from a local place for 20 so I was able to ride that day. I got the carb rebuilt it runs much better! Still bogs just a little at idle when you give it gas but that more adjusting the jets I believe.
