Sounds like crank bearing

2001 GTX 787 RFI DI

I'll try and post a short video with sound, but engine is making terrible racket,... how can I determine what this needs. Im ready to do a complete rebuild on this engine,.. because its a DI I dont think I have many options for swapping out the motor. Computer capability for a DI will that be hard to find? RFI DI engines were only made for 1-2 yrs I believe.

SO this just occurred to me,... what if I had the plug wires reversed,.. some have said that they fire at the same time so it doesn't matter,... but with a DI is the injection timing different ???

Can you post a quick vid of it by chance? I had a nasty noise like that and my cb shaft had snapped and was flipping around in the case. Don't run it for long periods or high rpms or your case might be at risk...

Ignition timing matters, so you can't reverse those. for the rfi injection, not sure.

Thanks. Hmm, it does not sound exactly like mine did. You might have a wristpin or rod bearing letting loose since it's more of a faster knocking than mine was. I was trying to find the vid I took when mine was doing it but couldn't find it. Regardless, it's gonna have to come apart, unfortunately.

Sorry to hear it. Curious what it ends up being if you can post an update when you tear it town. I've had to overhaul my gsx and xp. Xp had the CB shaft issue, my gsx had a rod bearing and crank bearing go bad. Good luck.

Just so you know, that's an RFI, not a Di. Di is only on 947 engine.

Thank You for the correction Chester,... so is it safe to say that if the plug wires were reversed it wouldn't run whatsoever??,.. just want to eliminate all possibilities before tearing her down. My thoughts are its going to be a crank bearing,... my brother inlaw was riding it when he claimed a "screeching' sound so he shut it down. Upon inspection I found the the jet pump bearings were all seized,...so I replaced all the jet pump bearings hoping that was the problem,...and now upon starting it the above video is the result.
I will keep you posted on the tear down and what I find. I knew this day would come rather sooner than later because Ive been dealing with the notorious leaky crank seals for 2 yrs,...when the ski sits for more than a week or so, oil leaks past inner crank seals and oil locks the engine. The ritual of clearing the cylinders to get it running was getting old. So I'm not disappointed but rather excited to get a fresh rebuild on this otherwise fantastic ski.

I came across a 1997 SPX for cheap, runs excellent,.. could I swap that 787 into my 2001 if I used the ECU from the 97 ???
