97 Challenger Starting Issue and Mag Question

TL;DR1: Have weird issue when attempting to start boat, stops cranking on its own without firing, requiring "reset" to crank again. Looking for input as to cause/solution.
TL;DR2: Possibly causing #1, is there supposed to be 2 stroke oil, in the Mag Housing? (and metal fillings)

Hello everyone! Happy Memorial day (weekend)!

I decided to really dive into my 97 Challenger (single 787 Engine) to get it running. Was bought late last year in a non-running state, owner had video of it running previously and the price was good, so I took a chance. He bought it at auction and the story he told me was that he hadn't been able to get it into the water, and now that it wouldn't run decided to sell. As I have worked on this boat, more and more issues/questions have arose.

First off: Main issue is that it wont crank long enough to actually start.

I found that a previous owner had replaced the MPEM with an ArielTek SD287 (op32514) Aftermarket unit which had the side benefit of no longer having to worry about the DESS system. The guy I bought it from claimed he had replaced the starter (looks new so I believe him). I had to replace the buzzer as it had died.

When I put the key on the post, I hear the 2 beeps from the buzzer, then when pressing the start button the motor turns over, but will stop cranking after an inconsistent amount of time. Sometimes after 2 seconds of cranking, sometimes after 5+ but never enough to fire or sound like its trying. After it stops cranking on its own, I am no longer able to crank, until I pull the key off the post and then put it back on, "resetting" the system.

I was able to get my hands on manuals and confirm that things appears to have been hooked up properly, and I even bypassed the post, just to ensure that the post and starter switch weren't problematic.

Second: Oil/Metal Filings in the Mag Housing.

There was some ducktape around the Mag Housing connection so I was following a hunch that maybe something in there was amiss. After a lot of cussing I was able to get into the Mag and found 2 stroke oil coating everything inside and metal filings on the Stator and Trigger Coil. This seems suspicious to me, but I dont have a lot of experience tearing into these motors. There isn't supposed to be oil, (let alone metal filings) in the Mag Housing is there?

I have attached pictures.

I realize that mistakes were made on my end in the purchase of this boat, but I am doing my best to try and bring it back to life, rather than see another 2 Stroke SeaDoo sink.

Issue #1. i cannot comment on why your starter stops cranking....probably how the aftermarket mpem functions. Not a big deal that the mpem does this because the boat should fire right up after pressing the start button so once that is fixed it is a non issue

Issue #2. The oil is probably from the crank seals going bad and you will need to split the crank to replace them and at that point engine rebuild is in your future. i would simply clean up the oil and run the boat till it dies then rebuild

Here is where you should be spending your time.

1. pull spark plugs and check compression. fresh rebuild you should get around 150psi and engine is done around 130 or so.
2. after you pull the plugs (and put the plug wires on the grounding posts) crank the engine with the starter and see if oil comes out of the spark plug holes (this will indicate how good the internal crank seals are) and also check for spark.
3. If you have good compression and good spark then all you need is fuel. i usually take a little premix 50:1 and squirt a little right into the open carb and trying firing it up. i do not use starting fluid. too hard on the engine. If it starts you have a fuel delivery issue and thats a whole other conversation.

Do not Jump start your battery...only use a strong charged battery. Jump starting is known to fry mpems.
