Sliding block modification?

I've searched around the internet but can't find anything on this. I have a 2000 XP and the sliding block is constantly breaking, I ride pretty rough and like to jump wake etc. I was wondering if anyone knows of any type of mod possibly a metal rod that could be used in the plastic one's place. Thanks for any input!

since i've never been on afraid to ask stupid questions... I'll bite.

What the hell is the sliding block ? Can you elaborate?

#27. It is the plastic piece directly behind the VTS motor that goes through the ski and connects to the prop to control the trim.

I must ask, why reply if you don't even know what I'm talking about. lol.

Here's a larger pic. Guys ask so they can learn, we're a helpful community here and also some guys call some parts other things other than what the factory calls them. The only time I have ever broken that is when I would spear the back of my XP into the sand jumping a huge wave in the ocean close to shore. If you keep breaking it I would start looking at the trim ring (#38) and see it it is egg shaped. That is what would happen to mine. The "sliding block" would break right at the M6 cross screw (#5) and the trim ring would oval out on me.

Good point, sorry if it came off harsh.

Anyway, I went back to shore after I had been jumping to check the trim and everything was fine. Went back out and spun out a couple times and did the usual circles and whatnot with the trim set pretty far down. Not sure if this is how it happened but it seems to happen after I spin out pretty hard. Could just be shallow water but I'm pretty sure the depth I was at couldn't have been the issue.

It's interesting you said yours broke at the M6 cross screw because that's the exact spot it's breaking on mine. I'll have to check that out. Would there be any way to fix an oval trim ring other than the obvious?

Thanks for the reply!

Only way to fix it is to buy a new one. Back in the late 90's I ate a few rings and rods in one weekend jumping. Surprised I never stuffed the pump into the ski. Tough when the really big breakers are in close, price to pay I guess.

If you look straight into the back of the pump look at the trim ring, if the "sides" are bowed in towards you the ring is bent. But pretty much if you have ever speared the pump it's probably bent. I remember an old bent one at my parents in my old toolbox, if I get a chance I'll ask my pop to check for it. The other thing is.....with the slide block disconnected the trim ring should float like butter at the pivot points, you should not need to push hard to move it.

didn't mean to come off as crass, but I have never heard it described as a sliding block and there was no reference to VTS so I was lost.

And correct, I'm willing to ask for clarification because as stated before, I don't embarrass easily so i'm willing to ask a dumb question, and then at least I will either:

a) know what the hell it is next time
b) help you clarify so myself/others can actually provide input.

i've never popped one, but i have bent the rod bottoming out and i've seen a bent rod #1 from a buddy dropping one off the back of the trailer #4 so at least in my small sample size the rod was the weak spot that broke/bent first.

at this point the only suggestion I could make besides the obvious is to buy spares, and follow the instructions above on checking to see if some misalignment is causing constant pressure on the block which would cause premature failure and correct that.

Racerxxx-

Checked the trim ring and it looks pretty circular to me, doesn't seem to show any signs of bending.

When you said it should move easily without the slide block connected you meant up and down correct? Or side to side? Or both? Thanks for the help.

Spimothy Leary- should definitely be called a trim rod or something that makes more sense, sorry for the confusion haha. Just ordered another one today hopefully this won't need to be done every time I come in from riding. I guess breaking things usually helps in the future when knowing what to do and not to do.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Funny thing is is that I did have a spare and broke them back to back, on two different lakes! And the point of this thread was to find out if anyone knew anything to do in this situation (like some type of modification) other than just ordering a new one. Maybe I just ride too crazy lol.

Mine broke also. I think if the bolt hole part was metal instead of plastic it would last a lot longer. I have a replacement from Nick but have not installed it yet....been almost a year. :)

Some one needs to make part #5 with threads that screw into the rod. Easy peesy to replace it then....Wish i had a machine shop.

So do you just let it dangle while you ride or can you set it at a permanent position?

Also I think I read somewhere that it being plastic may save the sliding block from busting up the vts motor if you hit something. Don't know if anyone can confirm?

well, at the moment I have it zipped tied back in a set location....middle I think.

good point about it being a breaking part to save the motor....but i still like metal.

No, zipped tied them so they don't flop around.

I bought a pvc pipe and heated it then stuck on the big nut at the hull to get the right size.....but have not taken it apart yet.....not enough time as the ski is in florida and I live in Michigan.
Looks like a bear to reach inside the hull of a GSXL to get everything.
