I rescued a 95HX from there some years ago, we drug it out with a fourwheeler, red mud and all, he has bought many skis from me over the years and I have bought many parts from him. It's kind of funny I nicknamed it the junkyard dog lol

Small world. I peeked through the fence not too long ago and he's getting some 4tec skis in now. I'm hoping he can get a spark in so I can swap the motor in an X4 hull.

Wait...what?!

As if I didn't have enough work on my hands...

My personal XP decided to eat a MAG cylinder at some point last season. I'm not sure what caused this. Luckily the walls aren't scored, so I may be able to get away with a new piston and hone. (Story of my motor life recently). The other blessing in disguise was finding the crank shaft is worn slap out- worse than my parts motors! If you remember, this was an untested junkyard motor, so I did get some time out of it. So now I'm trying to decide what to do. I have 1 parts motor that may have a good crank, but that its still TBD.

My pride is kicking and screaming when I say this, but I'm entertaining an SBT motor right now. As much as I want to build some bulletproof race motor, time and mostly money are against me there, so that makes the SBT route the most cost effective option at this point.

Man I ran the chit out an sbt engine in my 96 xp. No worries just beating the dog piss out of it when you have a no fault warranty. Their shipping is rape though. Mine ran dead on oem specs, I can't speak for all of them though

If your looking to get on the water asap and this is just a rec ski, I see nothing wrong with sbt. Ok go ahead and get out the pitch forks

I'd be going back through the fuel system, looks lean to me

I will be so this won't happen again.

Since I'm still operating on a college kid's budget (until August anyway) and since #2 is a flipper, I'm going to put aside my XP and focus on getting #2 out the door. I have a good top end for it, but since I want to build it right (and not have the next guy come calling again) I need a new crankshaft. When I get around to building motors to keep, I'll either buy an OEM reman or get one of my current ones professionally rebuilt, but right now an SBT crank is winning due to price and availability. Is there another option out there for around the same money or that supports a vendor here?

Well, with money being a little tight due to (everyone else's) weddings, I've only got cash to get 1 ski fixed and I opted to get the flipper ski fixed. So for now #111 goes back into storage.

And yes, that's a Yamaha in the back ground. I picked up that GP 1200 and an Exciter boat for $700 which I've been building for my dad. I haven't decided the fate of the GP, but all my ideas would surely piss off the die hard guys so I'll keep that quiet for now. The boat goes to the lake this weekend which means is time to focus 100% on the XP and GTX

#2 out of hiding:

Finding an exciter for 700 is nothing to sneeze at, hell of a deal

Actually it was $300 for the Exciter (no motor), $300 for a complete '99 GP 1200 and $100 for a nice Bandit trailer. I had to make 2 trips that day..... :coolgleam:

The Exciter had a relatively uneventful maiden voyage, which is how we always like them to go. The garage is now clean (and empty) to begin work on the XP.

I ordered an SBT crank and counterbalance shaft that should be here Friday (the rotary shaft checked out fine). The goal is to have the bottom end built and ready for a top end by first of next week.

Progress has been a little slow mainly due to paying fab/ mechanic jobs coming my way, but a little extra cash never hurt anyone.

I got the inside of the cases cleaned up and the bottom end assembled:

Another plug for Nick at Westside Powersports for getting me the parts I need in a hurry!

I also pulled the rear ebox from my parts XP and began to clean this mess up and put together 1 good box out of the 4 I have laying around:

The jugs from my parts XP were in good shape but needed to get cleaned up, so those got dropped off this morning at a local machine shop to get honed and I should have those back in the next day or so.

I go back to school for my last semester (yay!) in 8 days, with my last day at work being Friday. It'll be a heck of a push, but I plan to take the XP to the lake and water test it, with the goal to sell around July 4th after I get some hours on it. The 2 stroke market around here seems to have actually gotten better lately, so I hope the trend stays that way this season. This has been common lately:

Unfortunately, my plans to assemble this ski before heading back to school were a little too ambitious. I had other things come up that were more important, so it got shoved back into storage to be wrenched on another day. Needless to say I'm bummed, but I didn't want to rush and make a mistake. So for now, progress will be all but come to a hault until August. When I start work in September and actually have something giving the illusion of a real income I'll hit the XPs again, hard.

Until next time....

Progress!

I dug the ski out of storage today and got the motor 75% assembled, which I won't bore you with pictures of a 787 build. What I will show pics of was the tool I made to help with getting the stupid circlips in with:

It's an old screwdriver with a notch cut in it that made installing the clips some easer. It paid for itself I guess...

I started working on carbs today. When I pulled a carb off the shelf to rebuild I found this-

Harbor Freight parts washer to the rescue!

Please post an after picture because I don't beleive it's gonna clean those carbs. If it does I'm gonna buy one of the harbor freight parts washers !!!!!!

What I have is the Ultrasonic Cleaner, which is intended for jewelry. Using either Super Clean or Simple Green, I have had really good results with it. It works amazing when cleaning dirty hardware. It's not a miracle worker, but it saves time and eye fulls of carb cleaner for sure. I've had this unit for a year and am pleased with it. There's lots of info online as well.

After a few cycles with 100% Simple Green:

A quick spray with carb cleaner:

It did a good job loosening up the sludge that was there and made it easy to get clean. What's left is going to take a wire brush to get off.

I have been enjoying this thread. I have a 96 XP that runs like a banshee for a while, then starts misfiring badly, after new coil and wires it's the same story. I will be checking out the fuel system (no gray hoses). At ti!es I have been ready to give up on it, but seeing your projects gives me some encouragement, especially knowing that they are still a desirable ski. Hang in there.

I will check that out. I am good with cars, but a newbie with watercraft. I just got the craft out of the shop, a bearing in the jet pump failed and wrecked the housing. Pretty much rebuilt the pump. The job ticket showed that the charging system checked out OK. Could they still have missed that?

Yep, these things can make you want to light them on fire and shred them. At the same time. But the ride is so worth the hassle!

So I'm back in Auburn for graduation and swung by the local salvage place to pick up a few things.

Yeah, they have a lot of parts. I snagged a single gauge hood for my other XP to attempt to add a GSX info center and tach to it.

It's faded, but solid. Should be the perfect candidate.
