Slowly but surely chipping away at this thing. The motor is aligned and locked down, carbs installed, exhaust manifold is in and now it's down to all the little details that take forever.

Even though this is a flipper ski, I'm too OCD to let some things go. Bolt heads got painted black:

Ground wire on the starter was cleaned up:

The starter itself was inspected, cleaned and painted:

This afternoon I poured a little gas in the carbs and was greeted with this:

Progress feels good. And open exhaust is loud.

It's down to the final to do list:

Nice work.
How do you like that HF press.
I don't know how I went so long without it. One of the best cheap tools I have gotten from them.

I absolutely love it. It's been used far more than I ever thought it would. I've got some minor mods I want to do to it in the future, but it's been great as is. I do a fair amount of metal fab work when I'm not working on Seadoos, so I'm looking into a Swag Offroad press brake kit so I can get more use out of it.

Very nice. Mine has only failed once trying to remove Track pins installed new in 1950. I didn't feel so bad when John Deere's 100 ton track press could hardly move them.

Why am I posting a picture of my skis on the trailer with my feet kicked up? Because I should be headed to the lake right now.

#2 won't crank and is backfiring. I tried to crank it, but the starter was struggling really bad and it would only hit a few times. I pulled the plugs to spin it over by hand and it was very difficult, so I yanked the (rebuilt) pump off and that solved the problems. I'll be addressing this issue later.

In trying to crank it, it's backfired twice and LOUD so I am thinking its a timing issue. Im researching some things now. This forum is such a good resource.

Could also be leaking needle and seats. If the fuel sits in the pipe and ignited it would be loud too.
Nice picture but where is the beer?

Yep, this thing backfired HARD. I found this today:

I'm having issues getting this thing to fire back up. I have checked:

RV timing is good and the seal is new.

Mag cup was pulled from a running motor, so it's set correctly.

The pickup is clean of metal shavings.

Flywheel key isn't sheared.

Carbs were tested for leaky needles and seats.

It's getting spark.

MPEM was pulled from my other XP and should be good, though I may change that for kicks.

What am I missing here? I'm running out of ideas. And patience.

Just for sh#ts and gigs pull the red wire off the rectifier and see what happens probably long shot but those little do weird stuff

1of500 sorry not trying to copy your shits and giggs I was typing at the same time as you. Ironic!!!

No!!! rebuilding is half the fun[emoji1] ...just call it your winter project

I'm too far into it too quit now... It's gotten personal! LOL

Also, here is the brass gear:

It looks alright and spins fine. Where should I go from here?

I just LOL'd looking at the time stamps on those posts. You know you own a SeaDoo when you can have the motor pulled and bottom end apart in an hour and a half haha.

Well, it's not much of an update, but I ordered a new rotary shaft last night. I'm hoping to make another push on this ski this weekend so I can water test it while it's still decently warm around here.

Ever have one of those ideas that sounds like a good idea at the time?

Is there a prayer of these cases ever working again or is it a lost cause?

After breaking every tool I had trying to get the rotary shaft out, I tried the air hammer and it slipped. It was a dumb idea, I'll admit

Make sure you remove the snap ring that retains it.
Then I use a cheap harbor freight slide hammer threaded into the gear side and within a couple pulls they come out.

Yeah, I definitely forgot the snap ring. And yep. I feel like an idiot.

Got the RV shaft out with no trouble. I'm going to clean up the damage and gamble these cases will pass a pressure test. Fingers crossed.
