Seadoo XP Starting Problems (1996)

Hi Guys,

Just a few newbie questions. I got great help and advice from my last post which helped me greatly with that issue. Now i have another question.

My issue is, we got some water into the carbs/engine (<==== forgive me if im calling it wrong, i'm trying to learn), with this, i got help and advice from a friend who owns a Ski and knows a fair bit about operating them.

Anyways, he left me with spitting the water out without the spark plugs in, and trying to start-up the ski again with the two spark plugs in. I can get it started when i just have the battery charged and installed in the ski, but after a few minates the battery in dead again. I'm trying to get the engine idling and running to get the flush maybe running through it.

I'd be most grateful if you could let me know, should my battery be lasting longer? (could you give me more information surrounding my battery and what i'm doing?)

Also, what would you's do to get the water out?

yup..pull plugs still, and expell ALL the water out, before you brak a piston. Then install plugs, and if/when you get it to "stumble idle", dont give it gas, if anything, feather the choke. Dont worry about hav'n water go thru it, aint crating enuf heat, while stumbling to grab idle.:cheers:

and about battery, how old is it? makes sure its still good, if it is and ur still not holdin charge, its rectifier

Thanks timmyboy. Will have a go at the Ski again tomorrow. Bad things is, i have it stored at my girlfriends parents house at the moment. So i charge my battery up, travel up and try to get the rest of the water out, which i think i have done now, to have my battery drain after about 5/10 mins. Is it normal?

Thanks seadoo GTS. Battery isn't old at all, which is the weird thing. I brought it two days ago and got it tested to be told its fine.

Should it be dying so quick? or does the Jet Ski have an alternator type device like a car which charges the battery while in operation?

The battery will only charge once you get the Sea-Doo running. There is a magneto that charges the battery. Yes, you will run down your battery if you keep cranking it over without the engine starting. The rectifier is only one of the parts in the charging system that can fail.

i know this may be a far stretch but i knoe that on my seadoo (1996 seadoo xp 782)

if your seadoo has a VTS black box that is defective it can run your battery down if you have a 7.5 amp fuse in you dess. far as i know is in the VTS black box there is magnetic switches that may stick making it defective running you battery down.

but i dont think it would run your batter down that fast!

try opening you DESS next to the battery (it should look like a black case with 4 wires comming off it.) there should be 2 fuses 15 amp and 7.5 amp try pulling out the 7.5 amp fuse and see if your battery life is longer, if not take it to your nearest dealer or find a teck guy on here to help you out.

Thanks newt, i will check that out tomorrow when i have a chance to look at the ski. My VTS doesn't work, which that could be the case.

Does the magneto charge the battery when you run the flush on the jet ski?

Also i had my battery fully charged and and sitting on mantaince, until my girlfriend turned it of.... It was off for a day, so i knocked the charger back on and it took a full day to say fully charged again. This can't be right? i need a new battery would you suggest? even with it being tested and saying its fine.!

It charges whenever the engine is running. Your battery should be OK if it load tested OK.
