Just as the title says. The other night I was trying to get the info gauge out of my 96 XP hood. Well, my fat meat hooks(hands) weren't really conducive to twist the locking ring nut off. So I PM'd Jetskigoodies and asked how he did it, and he said you basically need to be a contortionist to get them out. Now for all the thanks to be spread, JSG made a comment about the exhaust nut removal tool that Minnetonka4me made out of PVC (Here)and how he(JSG) was going to make something like that but for the gauges. Well I just happened to be at Lowe's for some stuff for work and I swung through the plumbing department and picked up a $0.68 2" schedule 40 coupler. I then brought it home and modified it. I already had 2" PVC from another home project and I always have hardware at home from work, but I'll make a list of what you need later. So I drilled and tapped 3 holes on the coupler a 1/2" down from the edge as seen in the first picture. Then I installed three 8-32 button head screws, they have a nice half round head and will fit in the slots in the nut ring to "grab" while turning it off.

The connectors will fit through the coupler, even the fat 6 pin pack for the info gauge. From there I cut a piece of 2" PVC 10" long(the handle). Now on a three gauge hood the ring nuts are tight to each other but the PVC coupler will fit you just need to push it down. Next take the 10" piece and fish the wiring inside it and push the handle into the coupler. There shouldn't be a need to glue the two pieces together since there is a light press fit of the two PVC pieces. Plus if you angle the handle just a bit the PVC will lock against each other. Now you can get you fat hands onto the PVC handle and easily twist the nut loose, then reach in and undo it by hand. The gauges with the brass nut on them(like in the pic) will also fit you just need to work a bit of a gap to that side just until you get the handle seated. I only went with three of the button heads because 4 was way too tight, perhaps four 6-32's would have worked, but I didn't have any problems with the three.

So first off I'd like to thank Minnetonka for posting his pic and inspiring Jetskigoodies. I'd also like to thank JSG for planting the idea in my head. So a big :grouphug: to both you guys.

If anyone has any questions/comments please don't hesitate to ask, but I think the pics are pretty self explanatory.

So the material list:

1-- 2" PVC coupler
1-- 2' piece of 2" PVC(unless you already have it)
3-- 8-32 X 1/4" or longer but you'll need to trim them so you can rotate the coupler between the gauges
1-- 8-32 tap and #29 drill or .136 drill

Interesting! I've been putting off transferring my gauges from one hood to the other. Maybe now this will help. I can get my hands in there, but can't get enough torque on those bad boys.

Very nice...

I shouldnt even take credit; I was super busy and handed my dad a exhaust outlet and asked him to come up with a tool to remove it. He came back an hour later with the PVC. I added the cap and the nut/bolt to get a wrench on it for the stubborn ones.

I usually try to push on the lens and find one that is loose. Once one is out there is more room to get your hands on the other ones. On really bad ones I drilled a hole in the bottom of the hood and used a flathead to pop the "nut" loose.

Im surprised the shaft fit in the hood! Im gonna have to make up one of those. Nice work guys!!

I should also mention you could make one of these with some smaller PVC for the VTS nut. Very useful tool if you are working on alot of machines w/ VTS.

Yup I made one of these for the VTS nut. Worked out great!! Much cheaper than the $100 tool.

We will be making two in the morning, one for my house and one for my buddys house. I have 5 hoods in the basement that need the gauges taken out so we can sell them, i was just dreading taking them out. Im glad i read His thread about that exhaust nut tool, and now you took the guess work out of it for us.

Can you say STICKY.
Anyone that has even put a single gauge hood on knows the pain in the A it is
Great work

Speaking of the single gauge hood, do you use the nut or do you use the rubber boot to hold the gauge?

I used both, getting the nut on is a pain with that rubber boot but it will go on, now if you find an easy way to do that post that too. After i painted my hood i put the rubber boot in than used some dish soap as lubricant for the gauge to slide in, when i tried to put the info gauge on without the soap the gauge would pull the rubber boot through to the inside of the hood. Just a heads up for when you go to put yours in.

The gauge that came in my single gauge hood did not have a nut just the rubber boot. I'm going to just use the boot to hold the INFO gauge into the single gauge hood.

You gotta use the boot JSG...the hole is too big to use the nut on the single gauge hoods.

And on stickys...I cant stand them all. There should be two stickies....one for newbs explaining how to conduct themselves, and another that is a important topic list with links to threads.

I'll tell you the boot is a honeymoon fit for the gauge, I don't think it would come out easy.

It will not come out. We wouldnt need this tool if they would have just used the doughnut in everything.

I used both the boot and nut if i remember correctly. Also with the sticky, im with you maybe this should be moved to the how to section,

I have the single gauge with the plastic nut on it.
Gap is sealed up with a silicon bead.

You do know the boot is only like $7.

I have old ones from my GTI but its a pita to put rubber boot in first then try to get gauge to slide in w/o pushing boot through.
I just gave up....

It only took me about 5 mins to separate the hood halves and use a cheap rubber strap wrench on the nuts.... Trying to do it without splitting the hood is not in my vocabulary with my bear paws.

Laziness breeds innovation.

I also didn't have a nut driver to fit down into the deep recesses to get the screws by the mirrors.

The nut drivers is still too thick to fit into the hole, so i take the 5.5 driver and grind down the outside of the tip of the driver until it will fit, depending on what year your hood is will determine what size driver you will need, i know 95 xp and 96 xp have different sizes
