Rope ingestion

Hi guys,

Last week I got a rope inside the pump on my GS. The engine stopped and I had to return to the beach swimming.
This is the aspect of the pump. The rope melted into the wear ring and was very difficult to get out.

I already changed the wear ring but during the initial test on water the ski had a slight vibration that was not there before. I got the drive shaft out and went to get it measured. It had a deviation of 1mm, so they fixed it.

Question: Judging from the photos, would you say that the impeller is bad? Would you suggest me to switch to a new one? If it’s a yes, which brand/model would be appropriate? (Sea Doo GS year 2000).
thanks.

The impeller looks good from those pics. If it has any small nicks, you can file those down with a small file.
Post some more pics if you have any bad spots.
I've seen many ropes around the shaft but never as bad as yours. Hope everything worked out OK for you.

Did you put the little rubber bumpers back at the end of the driveshafts when you put it back together?

Yes, I had special care about that.Thanks.
Everything works ok, but I'm not totally sold on the new white wear ring. No lips like the OEM and it was very easy to put (like it is a little bit small. I used a couple of screws, just in case it wants to spin.
What clearance between the impeller and wear ring is ok?

The pump housing might be cracked around the stator hub.

Doesn't look like the wear ring was changed. These are handy for reaching up in there to cut rope, available in assorted size and color:

Post a picture of the newly installed wear ring with the impeller. Let us see the gap.

Anything wider than a width of a dime is too much.

White WR installed.

Measuring the gap. Aprox. 0.13 mm.

Seeing that this kind of incident is pretty common on PWC riding,I wonder why is that the manufactures do not include a net, screen,or something on the water intake hole to restrict the ingestion of ropes or stones.

What size is the feeler gauge you have in there?

I know of others that have put a screen inside of their grate. I have been riding for over 20 years and have NEVER sucked up a rope. I let a friend use one of my skis and he got one within 10 minutes. I really think this comes down to the driver in most cases...

Yes...riding over ropes is not a good idea... Last summer two guys pulled up with their GF's and 2 new Sparks. Don't know how to unload them off the trailer so we know we're gonna have some fun. Off they eventually go...1o minutes later we see one being towed back. Pay no attention to it until one GF approaches me and asks if I have a knife or scissors. I look down to the shoreline and they have one Spark turned completely upside down and 2 guys staring at the bottom of the hull. They had wrapped a tow rope completely up the drive. I go to my machine and grab some heavy duty scissors and go over and cut the rope for them. I casually mention they need to flip the machine over ASAP but unfortunately they spoke really broken English so they just nodded at me.

I went back up to the top of the shoreline and continued enjoying myself. A good half hour later they asked to use the scissors again so I look down and the machine is still totally upside down.

They eventually loaded it and I'm sure the local dealer seen it the next day.

Between weak English, lack of knowledge, and lack of tools,,, I'm thinking it probably went to the dealer as well...

I travel 5 days a week. The language barrier can be a challenge to get by sometimes..

It can also be diameter of the prop...they get sanded down over time from sediment..but Im an OEM only wear ring guy.

Also...when things are apart after a rope incident you should always roll your prop on a flat surface and see if its bent. just like a pool cue.

Good point on that it could also be the prop. Bottom line, impeller or wear ring, 10-thousands of an inch or more becomes an issue.

If you do buy a new impeller, measure it at it's width and then measure your old one. This will tell you what was wrong and you may have a backup impeller.

your wear ring, clearance, and impeller look fine. a bent drive shaft will cause a vibration and cavitation. it can be straightened and will be fine. if it was 1mm out you said, that was your vibration problem.
