I've been lurking and studying for a few days since becoming (by proxy) the new owner of a pair of antique SeaDoos. A friend of my dad's mentioned that he needed to get rid of the old skis he had sitting under a tarp in his driveway. Apparantly they haven't been used since his kids moved away from home. I bought both and two trailers for $1k. Dad has them in his shop 90 miles from here...I'll lay eyes on them for the first time Saturday. Other than a few mice, some mold, and dirt, he says they are solid. Motors and steering are free and almost all of the parts are there (the GTI is missing a piece in front of the guages).

It seems to me you guys enjoy a good restore project as long as there are pretty pictures involved, so here's the BEFORE versions.

I know the 96 is a nice ski.
But first things first:
1: change all gray tempo lines out and replace with black auto line and add an in-line filter to both skis a Fram G2 works well.
2. I would drain and replace all the oil and gas, clean the tanks and refill with a "Good" PWC oil,
3. replace the oil filter with an OEM one.
4. check compression....actually this should be #1 to do
5 rebuild the carb and clean the little filter inside, replace the needles & seat with OEM not SBT or other aftermarket brands.

SuperClean is the best cleaner or Purple Power is next for the inside /outside of the hull.

this should keep you busy for awhile, keep us updated.

First, I gotta get the things home. Dad has them in his shop 2 hours away. Being a chronic tinkerer, I'm sure he's already started flushing and cleaning. I hadn't counted on them being on separate trailers. I need to see if i can trade the two singles for a dual. One of them is a Shoreland'r.

Update. I didn't make it down there to get them this weekend, but talked to Dad last night. They have both skis running, but the 93's impeller has eaten itself apparently. Dad said a local guy will rebuild the pump assembly for $250. Might be worth that not to have to mess with it. I think you need a bearing press to do that right, don't you?

Forget all that Ill sell you a complete pump much cheaper than that. Just depends on if the prop is ok, or if its just a wear ring or what.

Well cheaper sounds way better! That also sounds a lot easier. I'm planning to go Monday to get the 96 and I'll check out the 93 and get some pictures of the malfunctionizations.

#1 is home. It starts and runs, appears to be complete. I hit it with the pressure washer to knock the topsoil and some mildew off. It's in better shape than I expected actually.

#2 is still at Dad's shop. It'll need a little more scrubbing and polishing than #1.

This is the one Dad thought the pump was locked up on. After looking at it, we determined that the "seal carrier" bearing was locked on the drive shaft. We cut what was left of the hose off and everything turns. I suppose I need to pull everything out from the back to get to it, right? It all probably needs cleaning, inspecting and living anyway.

Lube that carrier up and see if you can get it to slide on the driveshaft...otherwise you will have to get a sawzall out and cut the old carrier out.

I can see its already got the repaired carrier mount there...that aluminum sleeve used to be plastic.

Roger that. either way though, have have to get that drive shaft back some way to get that rubber sleeve back on there. do I start disassembling everything on the back in order to pull the driveshaft out the back, or umbolt the motor and move it forward a couple of inches?

Now all of that is taken care of, how do I clean this crap up? I've tried hull cleaner, lime-away, pressure washer...it just sits and laughs at me.

Toilet bowl cleaner, but it will fade the black paint to gray so you'll have to repaint. Not a biggie from a spray can.

The GTi has new fuel lines and new oil lines. Oddly enough, the Tempo hoses looked great....maybe they had been replaced at some point. I had the new black fuel line laying there so I went ahead and swapped it out anyway. The pump got a new wear ring and an oil change. bought a sheet of Blacktip mat and have cardboard templates cut out to lay new mats. Its close to being on the water.

The GTs already had new black fuel line, so yay. It also got a new wear ring and oil change and is getting some new mats this week. Then I went to replace the oil lines, and ruh-roh. Both are broken off and just laying there. The oil tank is empty and the fuel tank looks like it has premix in it (I'll draw some off to be sure). I'm not sure how to get comfortable with the oil injection at this point. I guess I'll fill the oil tank up, leave the premix in it for safety and see if the oil lines fill up. If it smokes like a sumbeech, is that indication enough that the oil system is working?

Since I couldn't really think of anything to do to the GTi today, I decided to finally put it in the water. I took tools, parts, 2 collapsible paddles, and my daughter (as an extra paddler). Only had one major problem...significant quantities of bugs in my teeth. Damn thing started right up and ran like a champ all afternoon. Now if I can resolve my excessively tight wear ring issue on the GTs, I'll be golden! Thanks for the help and advice on here.

Three trips so far, no problems. Im starting to trust it. If my starter kit comes in today, I may be able to get them both on the water at the same time finally.

I solved a tight wear ring with a lot of patience and sandpaper. This was a delrin aftermarket part. I could turn it the impeller with the new ring installed by using a wrench. So with the pump off, I used a strip of 220 sandpaper to reach between the impeller blades and gently sand it down. Kept turning the impeller to find the tight spots and gradually got it to where I could turn the impeller by hand (without the wrench). It was still tight and I could hear it scraping the ring, but I installed it and was able to start the engine.

May not be the best solution out there, but it worked for me. Hope this helps.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. Hopefully I can get the starter back in it tonight and see how it goes.

The GTi is running fantastic. I adjusted the trim (there is a 2 position bushing in the nozzle) to put the nose in the water more and the difference in handling is significant. Its much more stable and much easier to turn now. I'm still running premix just because I can't prove the oil injection is working. I replaced the oil lines and I can see oil in them, I just cant see a measurable decrease in oil level in the tank. I put a piece of tape at the oil level as it sits in the garage to see if it moves over the next few rides.
