Removing MPEM to check fuses? How? GTI 96

Hey fellas.

Yesterday I tried to winterize the GTI. The battery was dead so I took off the terminals, I used my trucks car battery as the power source, with the engine off.

Did a lot of stuff, and then turned off the fuel and waited for the engine to stop.

eventually the engine went to a VERY high RPM (even abnormal for low fuel condition). I rushed to hit the stop button but nothing happened! So I panicked and pulled the negative terminal. It stopped.

Put it back on, and the ski is dead. No power, no beep beep, no turning over, dead.

I'm assuming by doing that pull of negative, i may have popped a fuse? Or worse?

Whats the easiest way to remove the MPEM and check for fuses?

Thanks guys, hope I didn't destroy my favorite ski :(.

Pull seat off and look towards the left side.
Pull box out and open it.
Fuses under black cover.

On the port side or starboard side? black box?! I swear I've never seen it....
The MPEM is very visible, it has the spark plug wires coming out of it. Where is it relative to that?

The grey E-box is to the left of the gas tank, access by removeing the seat first and look in front of the motor, remove bat straps & cables,
take out battery, pull back on floor shoe lever to release, then lift and pull back the box and around to front of Stator houseing and lift up and sit on top of SH to open and inspect. You can unhook the temp & spark & stator plug, and not have to cut any zip-ties.

Read your service shop manual cover to cover.

LOL that storm must have sucked!

I would get to it and check it out. They do rev up pretty high when you run them out of gas.

I do have a MPEM if for some reason you fried it.

5 amp fuse was blown!

I must say, the inside of the electrical box was SO clean! Everything was shiny and new looking. That seal is great!

Replaced fuse and everything came back to life.

Thanks again fellas.

DJ, you were lucky, but glad that the MPEM wasn't blown for you.

NOTE: You can charge a battery (with cables D/C), But never jump start a ski from a RUNNING vehicle. That can and has blown the MPEM unit.

Oh I know, the higher voltage can cook the MPEM.

What do you guys do about corroded battery terminals? Mine are shot.

If the terminals are corroded from the inside I would replace the cables, if you just have surface corrosion on the terminals, clean them with a small wire brush and apply dielectric grease.

What if I broke the terminals entirely? Heh.....

Where do I get replacement wires? I wouldn't mind changing the negative.

Put on new ones.If you don't,you will be posting here at the beginning of next season. They are easy to buy and also easy to make for very little money

I found replacement cables at Walmart, just take your cables off and match them up, they're not exact but real close, just proving "if Walmart ain't got it you don't need it". You could probably also find something close at an auto parts store.

If you want the originals click PARTS at the top of this page.

Will they rust within seconds of touching salt water? Its terrible.

God no.I have used all mine in salt water.Get stuck in to them with good anti corrosive sprays before you put them on.They last then for years.I am all salt water running. What do you need to know.
