Question about carbon ring replacement

Quick question, Do most people replace the metal collar next to the carbon ring when they replace the carbon ring? I plan on getting a carbon ring and bellows. Will i be ok with those parts? Also, how do i "break in" a new carbon ring?

I would get a new SS collar as well. I don't recall the price being that bad and the metal does get scratches in it that wear it out just like the carbon ring does.

I don't recall any break in process. Just that it might throw a little spray for the first hour or so

One more thing: Keep the carbon ring cool when running on the trailer...

That carbon ring depends upon being in water to stay cool. If you run the engine on the trailer, pour some water on the carbon ring. Do it relatively frequently so the ring doesn't experience huge swings in temperature. Ideally, have a helper keep a little drizzle pouring onto it while you're busy doing other things.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys, I plan to replace it all. Now what do you think about putting ATF on the carbon ring and SS ring during break in?

Help me out with why you would put AFS on the carbon ring? You have all that water around you that the carbon seal is designed to function in

just to assist break in. Transmission fluid has friction modifiers in it and i thought it would be a good idea. maybe not! :)

I wouldn't do it.

I don't have any reasons... but like it was said above... it was designed as a "wet seal." The ATF would just get flushed out after a minute or two of running.

Just my 2 cents.
