Carbon seal replacement

Hey guys, I am almost done replacing the carbon seal but the metal c clip ring is getting stuck on the collar in front of it. Any tips? This is on a 2000 gtx millennium edition

Make sure there are no burrs and everything is smooth. A little grease is helpful too.

I just replaced the rubber boot, carbon seal, and metal hat on a 96 GTI. The metal hat would not slide over the c-clip to let it sit in the bore. I almost decided to just let it ride but I didn’t want to risk the RPM’s of the shaft throwing the c clip off, or uneven wear. The cause of this not fitting is the aftermarket Titan metal hat is a thicker metal (smaller bore) than the original metal hats. All I did was take the C-clip’s outer side to a bench grinder very lightly and evenly. You can see on the third photo even after grinding, it still would’nt sit in the bore. Last photo...

If that’s an aftermarket Titan carbon seal kit, it won’t fit without modifying (grinding down) the provided c-clip, and even then it’s a crapshoot. If it is in fact Titan brand, send it back. Aftermarket junk

It was totally a titan kit . I ended up just reusing the original metal collar and c clip and just replacing the carbon seal and rubber boot. Thanks for the help!

You’re welcome! I bought one several years ago and went through the same thing. That’s when I decided to stick with OEM parts whenever possible lol
