Guys,

I got my Solas, wear ring and impeller tool today and removed my pump. I have the impeller and wear ring removed.

I noticed an unusual wear pattern on the old wear ring. One side(lets call it 12 0 clock) has a impeller wear depression in the wear ring where its unworn at the other side(6 o clock). Could this be some kind of mis-alignment somewhere???

Craig

What the heck??? I cant get the impeller to fit into the wear ring The impeller is like a 1/2 mm to big.(yes the wear ring is warmed to room temp).....I'm gonna try the freezer with the impeller.

Craig

use the old wear ring....:lols:

kid'n aside,..that sux, how's that happen? I just replaced my pump oils in mine, and what you know, when i pull on the pumps, the darn wear rings, stuck to the hull plate..., so continued to drain/install the new oil, then if didnt no better, the pumps re-slid right back over the rings...wtf.

OK, Impeller is in but its freaking tight......Alot of resistance...I had to keep rotating the impeller housing and apply alot of pressure while rotating to get it to seat against the bolt. Finally got the 12mm allen started and tightened. The impeller is rubbing 360 degrees. I can rotate it with the impeller tool but there's alot of resistance. Can I assume this ultra snug clearance is good and the impeller will seat once the boat is started??? I used a silicone spray on the wear ring surface while rotating the impeller in the wear ring.

Hope this is correct. I used blue loc-tite on the impeller to bolt threads.

Sorry but i put mine in and there wasn't any rubbing, there's suppose to be a clearance measured with a feeler guage, it's a small clearance like .400'' , i don't remember the exact clearance. I wouldn't run it with it rubbing, just my opinion, good luck

Seedooer,

I appreciate your reply. I've read so much stuff on the net about this process my head is spinning. I installed a Solas SRX-CD-14/19 impeller and a SBT wear ring. I believe its simply tight clearance with the SBT wear ring because I tried fitting the stock impeller too and it was an extremely tight fit too. I'll call SBT and inquire if this is normal and will simply "Wear in".

Guys,

I need some info.....What do I apply to the shaft and impeller splines? Anti-seize?? What kind of grease do I use inside the cone? My 4-tec has some kind of thick grease in there? Is there anything at the auto parts place I can use??

Craig

Timmy,

Just regular Marine grease in the cone? How about on the spline? Antiseize or grease there too?

Craig

Hey Craig...man, I was WAY off...for some dumb reason, read'n ur post, I completely brain-farted on the last sentence there, and missed it.

I used the "calculation" of using marine grease when re-assembling everything, to use marine grease where there is no zert...aka, splines at implellor/s and inside impellor itself. But, for the cone, i'd have to leave that with someon who's done that job, but going out on limb, cant see it being anything else, but marine grease..? Sorry, Craig, if previous post, misled.

Good find

I am lucky we have a seadoo dealer close by, the price looks better than 16.95. Curious how you think it works out.

Pump and everything is back together. I test started it and ran it for several seconds to allow the impeller to machine the wear ring. It was a tight fit but the boat started. Cant wait to see how she performs....Will have to wait till Sunday :-(

Craig

Sweet!!

Mike,

Had it out Sunday for a sea trial following the installation of the solas impeller and the SBT delrin wear ring. Holeshot improved significantly and top speed went from 45 mph to 49 mph.....I'm really pleased.

Craig

how did she run?

Craig, I just read your thread...not sure how I missed it, in the past. Usually if the impeller is a bit snug, it will seat itself correct when you fire it up. Being a bit snug isn't a problem...being too loose is.
Glad it worked out ok and you got the performance you wanted.

Karl

Thanks Karl

Karl,

Thanks for the reply. I learned alot in the process and dont fear any impeller/wear ring service ever again. Piece of cake now that I know what I'm doing.

craig,

did you notice after having it out if there was any markings on wear ring since your impeller was tight, or did it just seat nicely, what is the difference between the solas and OEM, they are made from the same material?

Mike,

The Impeller was solas and the wear ring was from SBT. If your question was difference between the Solas Impeller and OEM impeller, the difference appears significant. The solas is avery different design in addition its high quality polished stainless wereas the OEM was a stainless but mine was actually oxidizing quite a bit.

As for the wear ring, I havent inspected it since I went out. I'm assuming the impeller machined a finish into the wear ring to some degree. Apparently all impellers have some "flex" so a degree and over time the wear ring just needs replacement to restore the like new performance of a jet pump. We'll see how ling this ring lasts...I'm hoping at least 25 hours.

Craig

Craig,

thanks for the info. are the wear rings made from the same material, and is there a wear life to the wear ring, I know that it could get damaged at anytime, but is there a normal run wear life.

Mike,

Hopefully the experienced guys will chime in on your very good question. I'm not really speaking from experience but I suspect that the wear ring does have a life span if all things being equal and you dont suck up debris. What that life span is I do not know.

All wear rings are not the same it would appear. My SBT wear ring is Delrin according to SBT. its a different material than the stock one I took out. Is it better? SBT says yes but who really knows??
