I bought the xp about 5 years ago and got a lot of good use out of it before the engine seized up. It has been sitting for two years and I am ready to make a move on it.

The last thing i did with it was pull the engine and inspect the damage. I pulled the cylinder head off and found the flywheel side piston got chewed up and broke the case where the two cases join. I have access to a pretty nice machine shop but they don't do much engine work. I was thinking about trying to weld the broken piece back on and milling the flat surface. (any comments). Im not try to rig this thing but i am on a budget seeing how the other parts I have looked at are gonna cost a fortune.

Can anyone give me some pointers on where to start, what to look for and just a basic overview of rebuilding the 720.

I also want to paint the ski. My brother has knowledge on painting cars but he has never messed with any surfaces like a seadoo. Any methods that work well??

Thanks guys

The 720 has been around a long time and with a reliable reputation, I would think you could shop around and find most anything you need used however having cyls bored for new pistons may make a lot of sense and if the crank was not oiled really well for this length of storage you will be needing a rebiult one to get the new seals on the inside as well as the rotating parts all moving nice and smooth. A shop manual will have many pics of what you need to see when opening the crankcase halves, and buying parts here is always a good idea, you will read it over and over with the 2strokes make certain the fuel and oiling system is working well, when you doo get ready mix a few gallons of premix and mark the oil tank so you know it is drinking oil the normal way, once you burn away the premix you might want new plugs but save those so you can burn them clean at a later date.

i think its better to rebuild the engine, dont try to weld the broken piece back,it will give up again.
