Well it looks like my left engine starter is shot...I know Dr. Honda has expressed his disapproval on ebay starters. I have also read other threads about how they suck. Any opinions on SBT starters or am I better off having the mechanic rebuild? I think it's around $80.

I bought a starter from SBT and haven't had any problems with it yet. However, if you can have yours rebuilt at a reasonable price thats a good option as well. Hopes this helps. Devon.

Thanks for your reply...how long have you had it and do you notice a reasonable difference from the OEM starter (when it was in good shape of course).

Get a reputable shop to rebuilt it ...

If there's a starter/alternator shop within your area I'd get them to rebuilt it. Provided the shop has a good rep. That's what I did, on the plus side it's a bit cheaper and if you drop it off in the morning you'll likely be installing it that afternoon.

To be honest, my OEM starter was never in good shape, so I wouldn't have a good base line on that. The SBT starter is very strong. I still have my OEM starter and I plan to take it to a starter shop here in town and have it rebuilt; they only want $45 and they do good work. Devon.

I think I'm going with SBT. I spoke to my guy and he said my left engine starter was completely filled with water...I have no idea how that happened but I told him I could get a starter for $100 and he said he couldn't beat that and told me I should go for it...

Unless the OEM starter is rotten... normally all you have to do is to disassemble it, clean everything, use some 600 grit sand paper on the commutator, use a small screwdriver to scrap the junk out from between the copper plates of the commutator, and replace the brushes.

It takes more time to pull it out, and reinstall it that to do the rebuild.

Back in the day... Gokey (sp?) starters were great. Now it seems like all the after market stuff kind of sux.
