Just bought a 1991 or 1992 Seadoo XP. Previous owner said it ran the summer before last and then sat. Not sure where to start or what to do but am familiar with bikes, cars and ATV's so figured I would give it a shot. Any help is appreciated from getting it running to cleaning the hull. All help NEEDED! Thanks everyone!!

I'd say put in fresh fuel, oil, and plugs. If it has the gray fuel lines then get rid of them ASAP! As they are no good and will clog up the fuel selector and carbs. Good luck

Cleaning the hull
Don't go spending silly money on fancy Marine hull /Fibreglass cleaner
Soft Scrub from the Grocery store is every bit as good and a fraction of the Dollars

Working on Ski
as well as the fuel Lines I suggest you do the little filters inside the carb fuel pump
you have to remove carbs to get at one of them but it is worth the effort
Also I may suggest you Become a premium member and you can download both the shop and owners manuals I did and well worth it !!!!
save you searching on ebay and such like for copies some of which are crap scans of the pages
will help you no end with the correct procedures plus suggested maintenece intervals etc !!!
plus you help support the formums server and hosting costs :hurray:

Welcome we are a good bunch and will help all we can

Do they start?

It's great to have you. Your engines are the 587cc Rotax. You mention that you don't know where to start. It would be easier for us to start by finding out if they run. From your post, it seems they may not.

If so, what happens when you turn them over. By your post, you also appear to be a mechanic. Do you have fire? Do you have fuel? .....What have you done to help us get you in good running shape for the fast approaching riding season?

Thanks for the tips fellas. I am travelling for work this week but will digging into the machine this weekend. I will check it over and drain the fluids, then order some plugs, oil, fuel lines and start to clean the hull. At the moment I am sure the battery is dead if even good at all so I am getting nothing but once I get into it, I will let you know what is happening. Thanks again for the responses.

Can I start this out of the water without damaging anything?

Starting?....

I start mine periodically out of the water, with no water for flushing attached. But, that's because I know my blocks are clean. When I do this, I only allow the engine to start and turn over for a second or two.

I would not recommend this for your first start. If you do, make sure the choke works and can be used in the event your engine runs away from you. Not knowing the condition of the water jacket, I'd have the water hooked up so that if you get a start, you can turn water on and flush the cooling system.

Remember, do not turn the water on until you get a start and make sure you turn the water off before the engine..........

If only life were easy

So, all the elbow grease and advice doesn't matter when I bought a ski with water in the bottom end and a ceased motor, glad it was cheap.... any ideas of where to pick up the yellow 580 engine for a good price, or rebuild cheap?
