I know your supposed to use brp mineral oil in a 717 engine but it's not cheap can't I just use to-w3 out board oil in it? Or will that mess up my engine

You can use what you want. Just be aware that a TC-w3 oil is a slow death to a rotax engine.

You need a API-TC oil. The cheapest is the Citgo Mystic 2-stroke. But it's not easy to find. (some farm stores carry it)

That's funny. My Polaris is the same way.

I had two Polaris skis for 11 years. I don't think I used a gallon a year. I used only Polaris Synthetic Gold. Expensive but at the rate I used it I didn't care.

So I can pump the tc-w3 oil out of the tank disconnect the oil line above the filter and then let it drain out and then fill the tank up with brp mineral oil and then I should be good to go?

I would not use TC-W3 on any rotax engines there are many stories out there, but just to be on the safe side you should use API-TC standard oil.

HP Marine for non rave valves, Interceptor for rave valves. Pretty simple and never had one issue.

Me too,.... Ive rigged it up so that when I sit on the seat, it activates the spray nozzle.

Don't laugh... Polaris use to sell a saltwater kit... that basically pumped WD-40 (or other fogging oil) into the engine after the end of the day.

Used fryer oil from McDonald's works best. You may even find a stranded McNugget in there as a bonus. They burn up nice.

Do not use outboard oil. Do not skimp on oil. I ride sleds more than skis but regardless the oil I use is very important. You can't go wrong with BRP oil. It's all good. Coincidently the best was their synth blend which has been discontinued. ?? On sleds with RAVE valves, the blend kept the valves the cleanest compared to BRP mineral and BRP full synth. I've run Amsoil interceptor with acceptable results, but it's hard to get and no cheaper than BRP. Also, on the sled forums, a lot of guys like Mystik full synth snowmobile oil. Mystik also sells a full synth PWC oil that's exactly the same as the Snowmobile oil, just a different label. Our local Farm and Fleet sells the Snowmobile oil for a little over $20 a gallon, that's half the cost of BRP or Amsoil. Mystic is made by Citgo and has very good reviews from what I could find. I picked up a couple gallon last winter but haven't used it yet. Based on reviews of it and my knowledge of other Citgo products I wouldn't be afraid of this stuff at all. And the price is unbeatable.

wabash, the veterans on the forum agree with you 100% in that you do not skimp on oil, and I only run XPS-II.

This forum sees HUNDREDS of the SAME oil threads every summer... "Can't I just use XYX"? it's only $4.99 a gallon, and UPS doesn't deliver to "whatever state"...

so, we kind of just have fun with it ;)

A friend of mine is a chemist at a refinery and I had him test bro oil and mystic. He told me that the two oils are basically the same other then color. I have been using mystic now without issue
