I just purchased a 96 Sportster Bombadier and the guy selling it has bypassed the oil pump and mixes the two stroke oil directly into the fuel tank. Are there advantages to doing this? Is it common?? Can I reconnect the oil pump easily???Any feedback would help. Thank You.

If he disconnected the pump corectly... then yes, it should be easy enough to reconnect it, and honistly... it's beneficial to the engine to use the pump.

On a Rotax engine... they use a rotary valve to control the intake. The center gears need a bath of 2-stroke oil, and the pump injects the "Mix" oil into the face of the rotary valve to keep it lubed. When you go to a pre-mix... the valve doesn't get the same amount of lube, and can wear prematurely. Also, if the last person disconnected the pump and didn't know what they were doing... you may find that the supply lines to the center section have been disconnected. If they are... the gears in the rotor shaft can be on their way out.

The Rotax injection pump is very reliable. Normally when there is an "Oil Injection" issue... it's a hose that has cracked, and fallen off, or the filter is plugged up.

Dr Honda,

Thanks for the response. I'll probably need to become a Premium member and download the repair manual. Im figuring that the pump was no good. Are replacement oil pumps expensive?

A new pump can be expensive... but you can find them on eBay cheap. Or look in the "For sale" section of this board for someone parting out a ski with a 720 engine.

Like i Said before... the pumps are reliable, and they rarely die. I would be willing to bet your pump was fine, and the person before you just wanted the assumed security of premix.

Personally, if the pump is still on your engine... I would pop it off, and check it first. Pay the $$$ to become a premium member, get your manual. It will outline the test.
