So I spoke with a local mechanic here in San Antonio and he mentioned that they will work on 96 and 97 models, but he basically said to dump the ski's asap due to their age. He thinks the problem that I'm having with the 97 and no beeps/no lights/ no start (a whooole other story in another thread here) sometimes is the ECM is bad aside from the diode fix. He said that they're slowly phasing the older model ski's out even on the lakes due to their impact on the environment. He also mentioned that chances are, even if I switch out a bad ECM for another used one, I'll mayyybe get another summer out of them. Bottom line- get rid of the ski's asap. He also mentioned that Seadoo even said that their ski's have a 10 yr lifespan? Its better to get rid of them now while they're functional than to have a motor crap out on you and then you have to pay for disposal because of the fiberlass hull...

Is there some truth to what he's saying? Is it like once you start having one go bad, they stay bad no matter what you do to them? Or does he just not like messing with or fixing older ski's and trying to keep me away so that he doesnt have to work on them??

This guy really brought me down and I'm beginning to worry that obtaining the skis wasnt a good idea.

sure thats great advise im sure he would be happy to sell you one of his new 10,000 ski's and you will have NO ISSUES FOREVER...this guy is a douche dont listen to him...a jet ski is a MACHINE any MACHINE can be fixed and the life span on a MACHINE is however long you let it be....he is feedign you a load of crap because he dosent want to have to work on it

I see no reason they wouldn't run as long as you kept them running.

And no, no new laws are preventing the running of old ski's anywhere. there are so few, and every year fewer, so while they will phase out, no new laws (that i know of) are really coming.

Disposing of the engines / hulls isn't actually that hard.

fuk that mechanic... if he's a member here and posted crap like this we'd be jumping down this throat !

he's wrong on all counts, there is nothing right there at all except an emo mechanic, he'd probably try and talk me into selling my kids mustang GT as well :)

and ps... disposing of a fiberglass hull = drive to dump , drop off, pay $8, drive home. its THAT easy

there has been a rumor about 2-cycles being outlawed for a long time now, possibly due to the new air quality restrictions, but those are only for NEW engines being sold. there are a few communities and private lakes in california that have banned 2-strokes, but they're either very small public lakes, or private, so they can do what they want.

edit: actually PWCs have a better chance of being banned on your lake than do 2-strokes honestly. Lake Austin just up the road from the OP banned PWCs for the memorial, 4th of july, and labor day weekends this year.

The guy is not only wrong but actually destructive and misleading in his comments to you. Older model PWC's, seadoo's with an X4 hull are actually very desirable. All you have to do is look at what they cost new and compare that to what you could get a good for now. I had a mechanic at what I thought at the time was a very reputable dealer tell me they didn't work on anything that old. He started spouting off all kinds of stuff that could be wrong and when I eventually fixed the ski it had nothing to do with what he said. Keep the skis. Fix them up and enjoy them. Banning 2 strokes (especially here in Alabama) is like trying to ban guns. Just ain't gonna happen anytime soon although people will probably try. Bottom line, learn to fix these ski's yourself or find a mechanic that appreciates the older models and is not trying to sell you a new one.

Thanks for your input guys. I guess I was a bit defeated from struggling with fixing up the 97 that this guy really put it on me... I'm gonna keep on keeping on and in 2022 I'll still be cruising my vintage/ classic PWC so people can see the skis at the dock and say "man, they don't make em like that anymore!"

Onward with troubleshooting!!!!!

Well.... he has a couple things right. (but he's still jack-off)

1) If you can't do your own work, then you will put a lot of $$$ by paying for his labor.

2) Seadoo (right now) says their skis have a projected "10 year Life"... but they only give you a 3 year warranty.

3) From #2... every time I go into my local dealer... I see newer skis being worked on. So, spending $10k doesn't assure you of a trouble free summer.

4) I can replace a lot of parts on an older ski for a fraction of the price of a new ski.

I guess the key thing is... if you can't do your own work... you are better off with a newer ski. But unless you buy "Brand New", with a warranty... you can still have a lemon, or be buying someone else's headache.

Just an FYI... last summer I sold a 1991 Si that was as reliable as any new ski, and I had a whopping $700 into it. also... my current pair of skis... I probably have a total investment of $2500 or less.

Tell me you would be embarrassed to ride these.....

you get a new tow vehicle Doc?

and oh, I'd be a bit concerned about that downspout draining right next to the foundation. you might want to consider digging a trench under he gravel and and laying in a couple sections of PVC to divert the water away from the foundation. just sayin...

What kind of oil should I use? What should my compression be? Should I change my gray fuel lines? What is this little tiny nut I found in the bottom of my hull? Should I clean my Rave valves?

Good thing I is here fer ya Brock buddy.

What kind of oil should I use? Bacon Grease from Ma's fried bacon is the best way to go, been using it the truck fer years. What should my compression be? You got one of them there new fangled skis where you put tootsie rools in the spark plug holes. Any compression would blow your tootsies right out. Tour target compression should be 0. Should I change my gray fuel lines? No, Black fuel lines are ugly. Unless you get them there fancy chrome ones. They is nice and shincy, could stare at em all day. What is this little tiny nut I found in the bottom of my hull? hmm, well probably goes with yur little pecker :) Should I clean my Rave valves? Anything that gots valve in the name of it gots to be cleaned and polished. Use yur bench grinder fer a nice polished surface

you just a keep them questions a comin Brock and we's will git that ski a runnin at top speed.

buddy Jake, a couple of them questions for ya.
1. What type of wax should I use on my seedo. I tryed my g'papas mustache wax but it sim not to work too good, plus he got mad.
2. What type of gas should I pour into my 88 seedo.....would it be differnet "then" the gas i pour into my Delta 88? All we has over here is a sunoco station with gas called sunoco 65 all the ways up to sunoco 110. but I think the 110 relly cost a lot .....2 bucks for a liter...(what's a liter?)

SDB, now you dun went and hijacked this here thread bout Doc's downspouts.

yer grandpa uses Mustache Wax??? damn city slickers. Tell em ta use Lard, much better. And what the hell ya want ta wax yer ski fer, it's just goona git dirty agin.

what a liter? SDB, you shure is plain ignerent. A liter is when yer coondog has a bunch a yungins.

Come-on guys... let's keep it on subject for the OP.

The subject was "How much bad advice can my mechanic give me?" Not... "How big are the Jack-off's on seadooforum?" (lol)

Hey, I represent that statement.
The OP was already convinced the mechanic gave him bad advise so I though the thread was pretty much dead. I was serious about the water from the downspout against your foundation - asking for trouble there.

Guess now I'll change my moniker to HUGE Jackoff.
