Hello everyone and first of all I would like to introduce myself, I am Steve and I am from Scotland, my wfe and I have recently purchased a very clean 97 SPX as a winter project as I have decided that I am now bored with tinkering with cars and bikes and we always fancied getting either a boat or a jetski.
Obviously I had my eyes open specifically for a seadoo and just a couple of weeks ago one came up locally that was exactly what I was looking for !
Overall the ski has been very well looked after which is apparent as soon as you see it. It was advertised incorrectly as a 95 XP 720 so I have since downloaded all of the correct manuals and been reading through this forum to get a grasp of what I am dealing with.
The ski has been unused for the last 5 years and was put into storage after it died on the water. apparently it was running well then it just died completely with no warning.
The engine has since been checked out and has good compression and is not siezed, I am confident that mechanically there is nothing wrong with it and that the issues surrounding its mysterious death are elcectrical. The previous owner stated they had tested various circuits and determined the fault was with the MPEM unit, however after realising he was using teh wrong workshop manual for an XP 720 and reading up myself on here and carrying out some testing of my own I am not sure the MPEM is at fault.
When I collected it the ski had no battery and alot of the wiring to and from the front electrical box housing the MPEM had been unplugged (presumably the previous owner trying to work out the fault)
I have now fitted a new battery, reconnected everything as per the wiring diagrams in the manual and replaced the main supply wires from the rear electrical box to the starter and to the battery as these were badly corroded. I also cleaned up the earth connections on the starter solenoid inside the rear electrical box as they were extremely furry !
I am now getting a good 12v supply if I connect my meter to the battery positive and ground it anywhere on the engine, so I am confident that the main earth and the main supply is now good.
I do not however get any gauges moving or beeps from the ski with or without the DESS key fitted.
My question is would this be caused by a bad MPEM or am I looking at a bad connection somewhere between the battery and the rest of the ski ?
Should I get some sort of life from her when I press the start/stop button without the DESS key fitted ?
My next port of call is to start from the battery working through every connection with the multmeter to see if I am getting power where I should be, is this the way to go or are there any common connections I should be testing first ?
I am very good with both electrical and mechanical stuff so have no issue working through this myself but I thought with the wealth of knowledge on here it woudl be worth asking a few things first since I am not familiar with jetski's.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and would welcome any input !
Thanks
Steve
