Dude, my satchel is the size of texas brohammer!

No I said I will give you $1200 as long as everything is functional, and pending a compression test and mechanics. Money talks homie and he sees a dollar sign, who knows?!

The top exhaust gasket has been leaking for a long time.. That is one reason the motor looks like crap.. drive it with the seat off and you will see water coming from the gasket.. I know because the paint is chipping around the gasket..

You are the man, thanks very much for looking at this for me. I emailed this dude and asked him if he has had issues with it. I am sure you are right but I want to see what he says. Again thanks for the input 99spxxx

I am back guys and I need some more advice. I have been talking to a dude that I met on craigslist awhile back that had some skis up for sale. He has a 94 SPX and a 95 GTS. The GTS was having some issues with stalling so he took it into a mechanic to get winterized and check out the stalling issue.

The mechanic repaired the issue and said that the pump cable was out of adjustment and readjusted it and now it works fine. They also tested the compression and it is 150 across on the spx and 150 - 160 on the GTS.

Now here is the deal. He originally wanted to sell these for $2650 with a double place trailer and there was no way I am going to pay that. He has come down now because he really needs to get rid of them (nothing is moving right now it seems) to $1625 for both and the trailer. Now here is the catch, Both of the seats are ripped, the SPX is missing the handle bar grips, and they are very sun faded and do not look the best.

I would likely need to paint them, put on new decals, either get a seat cover, new seats, or just deal with it but for me that will be hard because I am pretty OCD about how my stuff looks.

Now that we know the engines are solid, do you guys think this is worth it for the age of these machines? I was planning on getting a 96 SP but I can get these 2 and a trailer for just about the same amount.

Let me know what you guys think.

WTH????
Have no clue what he is talking about with that. You will have to search long and hard to find skis that old that arent sun damaged. If they both run good and are mechanically sound I say buy them. You may be able to apply a good buffing and some cosmetic touches and sell one for what you have in both. Or you can take the worst one and part it out and get some of your money back. Or if you want two skis then there ya go. Hand him $1500 cash and see what he does. Im sure you can easily get $1000 for either one of them if you wanted to sell.

well....they are nothing compared to the 96 xp so if you like power and acceleration you wont like either of them..As for the price it would depend solely on the condition of them....and from what you say they dont sound very good ...here is a good way to look at it since u are from michigan we can compare prices eveenly...
1) A 94 SPX BY ITSELF IN THE CONDITION YOU ARE DESCRIBING IS ANLY WORTH ABOUT $400 RIGHT NOW AS LONG AS YOU CAN RUN IT IN THE WATER
2) A 1995 Gts is worth about $600 up here and they are the most boring ski i have evr ridden but people like them becasuse they are big
3) depending on the brand and condition of the trailer its will be worth about $700 if its really new..i get them all the time up here for about 300 bucks for a shorelander.....

so to sum it up in that condition right now i would hesitate to pay any more that $1200 for the whole setup

Thanks for the input. I have no idea what that is either, I was kinda hoping you guys may know, lol. We are both mechanically learning still so names do not come easy, lmao.

Anyway he back peddled a little bit and now wants $2000 for them with the trailer... way to high for me for those skis and would rather get a 96 xp for that price. I am not worried about the sun damage, I just like my things looking nice. I wish I had a pic, these are a little more sun damaged then your average ski.

Anywho... my search continues!

EDIT: Brock, for some reason people here in Detroit Metro CL are charging an arm and a leg for older skis right now I have no idea why. Probably why nothing is moving. I saw some dude with a 92 sea doo with a trailer and was asking $1500 for it and the trailer, people are nuts it seems like.

the spx would be much more fun than the sp, 657 dual carb in the 94 spx (around 70hp), 580 single carb in the 96 sp (about 50hp) the real dog of it though is the 95 gts will be a 580 single carb, and being a big ski, will be quite slow.

you can get oem grips from osdparts or ODI lock-ons from anywhere for around 30 bucks, seat covers will be around 100 each as long as the foam is in good shape, you can install yourself if you have a half decent air compressor and pick up a staple gun from harbor freight and stainless staples.

as for the finish on the two, the gel-coat is really tough, so any chalkiness can be handled easily with a buffer and polishing compound. any faded plastic can be brought back to life with a heat gun, and the seems-like-it'll-never-go-away mildew stains can be handled with zippo lighter fluid. as long as the mechanics of the ski are in good shape, the cosmetic stuff can be handled with a bit of elbow grease and a few dollars.

EDIT: when/if you buy them, have the seller fill out a bill of sale as if you were doing three separate transactions, one for each ski, and one for the trailer. even though you agree on one price for two skis and a trailer, the state of Michigan won't see it that way.

probably what that meant was that the oil pump cable was out of adjustment, maybe injecting too much oil fouling plugs.

offer still stands on the xp...1400 and she is yours ill meet ya half way...

I will be around the forums just keeping options open at this point. Apparently there is an auction up on bronston <-- Spelling? it's mainly a snow mobile auction but they also have trailers, pwc, quads, etc. That is happening on OCT 6th so I want to wait before I get anything until I see what that has, unless it's a crazy deal.

it sounds like your market is actually better than ours down here in Florida. not sure if anybody agrees with me, but imo it's pretty hard to find running skiis for that cheap.

Hey Pravius , are you interested in a 96 GTX? mines been completely gone through , and has a warranty on the block till next august. im trying to sell it with trailer for 2 grand. let me know.

Thanks D I have a couple offers up here for much less appreciate it though.

I know 96 xps in florida go for $1000 but thats because the hell that salt water has put them though, and brock lives in bfe, you can get good deals in central and northern mi, but usualy you have to drive a few hours from metro detroit to look at them, and in my experience everyone says that the motor runs great, but then you get there and the oil lines are dry rotted the grey tempo lines have green goo dripping from them, and some how there cousin has the title but they swear they will get you them in a week. Apparently these guys forget to mention that until you drive 3 hours to look at it. Metro detroit prices are higher, there is many more buyers down here so that keeps the demand high, simple economics right. My advise dont spend more than $1500 with a trailer but always offer at least 20% less, they will counter offer. People list their items high because they know people are going to offer less. Make sure you take a good battery with you, a compression tester and a flashlight. Always check the oil pump lines and make sure those have been changed as well as the fuel lines. Check the pump and look at the impeller and wear ring. I always open the electrical box and make sure there hasnt been water in there and i wont buy a 787 that has any mods done to it. But thats just me

More really good advice. Beginning to really fall in love with this community you guys are great. I have noticed that a TON of these 96' Xp's are modded. There are like 3-4 of them up on Craigslist right now and all but 1 of them are modded. I do not know enough about these things yet stock let alone try to fix, buy a modded ski.

One more thing I will suggest...go look at skis. Even if its more than you want to pay for it. Now Im not saying take up hours of a guys time if you have no intention of buying one Im just saying do it for referense purposes. Use it to help you get visually familiar with what they are supposed to look like and have something to compare to. The reason I say this is because until I looked at the one I purchased I had never even seen under the seat of one of these things. Well not knowing what I was looking at I amy as well have been watching someone preform brain surgery. I did not know it until three days later that mine had a support bracket bolt sheared off inside the tune pipe plus the entire bracket was missing. But because I didnt know what I was looking at or for I had no clue anything was missing. Just a suggestion. Keep looking something will come up and you will know it when it does.

ALSO----try to narrow down exactly what you are looking for...a 96XP is alot of fun but not at all family friendly so if you have kids i would suggest something bigger ..like maybe a GSX ...I have a GSX also and I love it...there is tons of power and it will still soar through the air pretty good

Yeah, or if you want a raging sofa, get a GTX.........mine rides like a raging sofa............. but holds 3 people and crushes heavy chop pretty well.

I have no kids and my wife is more of a boat person so that is why I wanted the xp. I want to be able to fly and I would like to start to jump a little with it too and have read these are the best in my price range. I like the hull design and the aesthetics of the ski too. I am pretty set on the xp but if another deal comes along for a nice ski I will consider it. But for sure looking for more of a performance ski as opposed to leisure.

Funny, I live in MI, work in Troy and am craving a 96xp the same as you are Pravius. I've got a 94xp with a skat-trak impeller and a rideplate extension (the best, cheapest imitation of the extended X4 hull - Mines about 5in. shorter) and the ski's a blast. ***I cannot IMAGINE what mine would ride like with another 30hp. (94 xp's are 80hp).

Find that nice 96 and follow all these other guys killer advice and have about as much fun as you could possibly have sitting down on a jet ski. The 95's ride better/little quicker than the 94's and the 96's are their own f-n animal. Let us know how the search goes.

Also, i'm mechanically inclined and was able to do the following, which you'll NEED to do if you find a ski that's original, whether thats done by you or a local guy:
1. Replace gray tempo fuel lines
2. Replace fuel filter
3. Replace oil filter & injection nozzle lines (if not already setup for premix)
4. Disassemble and fully clean and/or rebuild carbs
5. Make sure impeller & wear ring/pump vanes are not damaged & replace pump oil.
6. Start saving for gas $ and have a blast.
