Well I'm as excited as can be. I got my first ski home!! Bought it from a co worked for $500 as he didn't want it. I don't know how long it's been since it ran but it has good compression according to the previous owner. I'm charging the battery now but I wanted to drain the fuel out of the tank because of its unknown age. What's the easiest way to do this? Also, is it as common to disconnect the oil injection and premix on these skis like you would do to an older outboard? I'm loving the site!! Ps I've driven and owned boats my whole life and am not new to forums either. Looking forward to talking with everyone!!

You've got a great cruiser ski there. I've owned a 96 Gti, it is a great riding ski and has the bullet proof 717 engine.

First thing I would get a compression reading.
You will need to change out the grey tempo fuel lines, clean the carbs, clean the fuel selector, verify the correct oil, and change the oil filter.

Since it's been sitting, I would also change the jet pump oil and inspect the impeller and wear ring while back there.

Welcome to the site!!

The grey fuel lines break down with the ethanol fuels today and destroy the fuel delivery system on these skis. So changing these is a must!!

Start with getting a compression reading and then go from there: fuel off, plugs grounded, charged battery, throttle wide open. Take a few readings per cylinder

Thanks for the replies!! Do I just use a regular small engine fuel filter as the oil filter, or is there a special one I need to use?

It looks like you are starting down the same path I am on. Bought a 96 GTI in April.

I am far from an expert, but can share my experience. I tried several ways to get the fuel out, but the best way I found was to remove the fill tube from the tank and insert a siphon. Having the tube off let me look down in the tank to see if any dirt/crap/debris needed to be cleaned out. There was very little, and I kept rocking the trailer to keep it all stirred up and sucked it all out. I am still keeping an eye on the fuel filter.

you need to get the specific oil filters from a dealer or there are several places to buy online like OSDparts, pwcmuscle, parker yamaha, etc.

go ahead and buy a new fuel selector for $20 and toss the old one in the trash. you'll want to clean out the carb, which has a small filter inside that will need to be changed or cleaned up. while you have the carb off, go ahead and change out the little oil injection lines, as they age and crack/fall off and then lunch the motor.

i see you're in Smithville, where do you plan on riding at?

Thanks for all the tips! I'll be riding with a friend on the Colorado river as well as lake bastrop and lake Somerville. Where are you from? I'm on tapatalk and can't see your location

i'm on the west side of houston, we usually ride at lake houston or at lake conroe since my in-laws have a boat out there.

Nice...I just got the same one, yellow and the seats aged as yours. I planned to redo the seats once the ski is running. Currently, I could not figure out why there is no power at all. I posted help on this forum already; hopefully, someone can help. Once yours are running, perhaps, you can help me by sharing your experience. Right now, I just don't know if the CDI is bad or I am missing some wiring.

Enjoy!!!

I plan to work on it when I get back home. The same day I picked it up, which was Monday, we left for Vegas! I get back tomorrow and will hopefully have it running after I check everything out on it.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'd like to see where on the Colorado you ride, maybe we can make it out, that way for a day sometime.
