Motor Testing outside of Hull

Okay,

I researched both the standard and premium side of the forums and did not see anything written up.

Does anyone bench test their motors out of the hull before reinstalling?

As I have everything removed (including the whole electrical wiring)while doing a complete clean-out of hull, replacement of broken motor mounts, reconditioning/repainting of motor and skid plates (rusted), installation of new fuel/Oil lines cleaning of fuel and oil tanks, top end check/rebuild and carb rebuild etc ...



I was looking for a photo of a setup OR do most people just reinstall everything back into ski before testing the motor as standard practice...

I would imagine if your an engine builder, that would be a really good idea, but for hobbyists, I would think it would take longer to set that up, than to drop it back in the ski. One of my favorite things about these skis is how simple they are to R&R the engines. Well, at least on the older ones that I mess around with.

Exactly, and also "bench testing", unless someone could device a way to dyno test would show you very little. The engine really needs to be tested under a load, ie in the water or a test tank.

the fun part is starting one w/o the pipe on it....

that'll wake your sleepy wife up ! And the neighbors will think you bought a machine gun :)
 
I wondered if it would run without the pipe... it would kill the HP, but just to start it sure would sound fun....

Not being as young and flexible as I once was, I like the idea of getting the engine up so I can see everything while it is running. Also can hook up water and run it a little longer without screwing up the impeller end.

I am sure someone could come up with a Rube Goldberg setup to put a load on it, do a search for Rube Goldberg for some ideas.

I once ran my 350 Chevy w/o headers on it. My buddy & I took it for a spin down my side street, turned around and stomped on it. I think I shook an old lady of her skin....I quickly put it in the garage and closed the door before the cops came.

You reminded me of when I was 17, a buddy of mine & a few freinds installed an engine his dad had built for him in his 1973 SS Nova. (very cool car at the time) As soon as we got it fired up, he backed out on the street with open headers, slammed it to the floor. Only break in time the camshaft got was WOT for half a block with the tires smoking. Too funny, I miss those days.......
