Hey,

New to the site and Jet skis in general.

Im from Michigan and am pretty sure I want a 1996 XP Clean if I can find one.

Let me know if anybody on hear knows of a good one for sale???

Thanks

Ben Peltier

houston and MI are a bit of a distance apart, you need to start local, start on CL or use searchtempest to expand your search area.
not sure of the values up there vs Florida but 1200-1500 is a good starting point assuming its not full of AM parts.
mine cost $1200 with spec1 and otherwise stock, and looked good on the outside but was a time bomb, it was gutted, cleaned, and put back together and 80ish hours later its still running great.

007Doo - i check Craigslist a few times a week. There are several in the Detroit/Lakes area. Try checking your area first. If one is down my way I can look it for you while talking to you on cell phone.

I'd rather have the '99 SPX as it's 3 years newer and the same ski... but that's just me... who really wants a 2001 RX Carb...

I do have a '99 GTX LTD w/a new engine and 1 year no fault on it (till nov 2012) for sale if you are looking to ride 2 up...

the XP is wicked fun, but I'm not sure it's what I'd call a beginner ski.

If you want to have a rider, you might want a 3 seater. here in PA the law says you also need a 3 seater to ski / tow stuff.

just FYI. the XP is fun (I have a '02) and have ridden the '96.

Thanks Guys I really appreciated the Help, Yes Houston is a bit far. lol but thanks

Yea I wont be doing much 2 up riding if any, I actually was debating a Wave blaster or HX but I hear those machines arnt even stable enough to hold your weight sitting still with out tipping???

There seems to be alota down in Detroit area for the 1800 to 2000 range.

So the SPX 97,98,99 is the same exact ski as the 96 XP??????

Thanks Again

the HX is also wicked evil fun... but a bit under powered stock, tiny gas tank, no fuel gauge, and god help you if you fall off in deep water...

still fun though, I rode one last summer.

haha Yea that's what I hear, are the wave blaster the same way???

Thanks

yes, the blaster has been described as follows: "like riding a piece of pissed off plywood"

out of the 3, the xp, the blaster, the hx, the xp is the more stable of the 3...
2K seems pricey, but again, i'm in florida, we trip over ski's down here, they're everywhere !

I don't care who you are...that's funny. I had a buddy years ago that had a 1100 wave raider. This craft, due to how the chines and rakes in the hull were shaped, had what was referred to as the "Yamaha ejection seat". If you hit a wake at a sharp angle and were not expecting it you would be swimming! He got so pissed about it he eventually ground down the hull and re-glassed it to match my GTX so his wife and son could ride it.

787 SPX 97-99 is the way to go... Just ask what oil they run and how often they let it sit between rides.. Also ask if they ever fogged the motor for winter storage.. I have owned my 99spx for ten years and I still have the original topend.. Great machine(i talk to her she likes me)!!!
Speaking of spx I have a 97 that is very low hours motor is still perfect paint.. Hull doesn't even have a spider crack on it... I was on a private man made lake on a ranch.. So It never saw waves.. Also I am just about to go thru it.. Rave valves Cleaning, fuel & oil line replacement, pump oil and full carb rebuild.. You won't find a cleaner ski out there. once I am done it will be show room condition.. For example on hours: I pulled the rave valves out 1st time ever done paint was still on the bolts, The valve was barely even dirty.. That is a tell all on hour estimate.. Pm me if you interested. Should have it ready to go by Monday Just got all the parts in today... Good luck on your search!!!

Well, whatever you do, If the guy says it runs and rides fine, but he "cant take it to the water right now", DO NOT buy it unless you have a qualified ski guy like some of them here on this site, look it over...I would say you would want to ride whatever it is, for a good 15-30 min, if possible..then you can check the hull, see if its taking on water, hear the buzzer if it overheats from a cooling problem, etc...and BRING A COMPRESSION GAUGE!!! people like to tell first time buyers, "yeam compression's great! just had a rebuild a few months ago". Then you find out one of the cylinders has like 60 psi or something stupid..
Just remember, there's ALWAYS another ski out there with your name on it...
Be extra cautious unless you're an excellent motor head, or have money to piss away...
Good Luck
