Hi all. i am going to look at a 99 speedster with the 110s in it this weekend. I had a 96 speedster in 1999 but sold it in 01. the 96 was pretty much problem free. i am just wondering if there was anything to look for in this particular model year? any problems that plauged them? The owner dry docks it and claims it has always been professionally maintained. i do not know the hrs on it yet either. thanks in advance.

There aren't any "known" issues with them... So... Just take it for a test drive to make sure everything is working.

Ok thanks for the info. Like I said, its been almost ten years since my last one so i am not up on them anymore much. Hopefully we can work out a deal and i can once again be a Speedster owner!!

Mine has been problem free. It is a 98, but essentially the same boat. This is the only jet boat I have owned, but I think it is the best smaller seadoo boat. You get 4 true seperate seats, and a slightly bigger boat. 4 people really is comfortable on one. And the twin 110's FLYS. Only problem....Major gas hog if you drive it like you stole it.

I've got the 98 too, as a bargaining tool i would bring along a compression test tool and a feeler gauge. Do a compression test after your test drive make sure to test all cyclinders also check the wear rings and impellers with feeler gauge. All of these items are somewhat inexpensive to replace (even a rebuilt 787), but you can use the results of your tests to possibly negotiate a better price if any of the items need replacement or are out of spec.

my 0.02 cents.

I'm not up on my engines, is the 787 the 110hp motor? When you do a compression test is there any specific way to do it. When we do our race cars we have to revolution the motor at least 12 times for a proper reading and squirting a couple drops of oil in the cyclinder also. Not sure this guy is gonna want me doing that to his boat..lol. How many hours are the engines good for? I know my 96 didnt have an hour meter. Even if this one does it could have been put on 2 years ago so i guess that number is irrelevant.
Thanks again for the advice, bery good stuff to know!!

Yes i think my 96 went high 40 something in mph. It felt pretty quick but i hated the seating arrangement and no one got any relief from the wind. Is this thing going to go faster than that?? :) The 98/99 seating looks much more comfortable and the fact that there is a cockpit for both front seats is a plus.

Hey Man, yes sorry 787 is the 110hp; 12 revolutions would give you a good reading (maybe little excessive for these jugs) just make sure that both the motors are warm when you test (wouldn't worry about the oil droplets). Most seadoo boat owners are very aware of the compression test so he/she won't likely worry about you doing the test (plus the head is right there so its not like your ripping off parts to get the plugs out). I had to put a new motor in this spring and compression on new was 165 PSI; just to give you a benchmark. But as long as they are close readings arcoss each cylinders you should be good to go. And as I was saying in the earlier post; if you need parts wear rings/impellers/motors etc check out SBTontheweb.com they have pretty much everything you need in parts replacement and they have great prices; I use them and i'm up in Canada. If you go with this rig you will be impressed! I still can't believe the wholeshot and speed these motors produce for something that floats!

Good luck shopping!

This boat is very comfy for 4 people. You get 4 full size individual seats. Plenty of room to move around. It goes low to mid 50's. Very fast but also very thirsty!!

First like to say to all the people who offered advice. Second I BOUGHT IT!!

Boat has some scratches in the graphics here and there but overall I would call it typical of an 11 year old boat. things that are wrong with it:
Blower motor for engine compartment doesn't seem to work
Gas gauge doesn't work
The engine vent cover on pass side looks like someone stepped on it and cracked it. other than that i guess we'll see how it goes. The previous owner owned for 5 years and he dry docked the boat so the trailer looks damn near new. The downside of that is both trailer tires are dry/hard rotting so those will need replaced. Came with a like new bimini top, bumpers, life jackets, some type of piece that goes over the nose so you could lay out on it if you wanted, a depth finder and a CD player. It booked for $4910 I picked it up for a little less than that so I feel pretty good about the purchase. Now time to figure out that blower motor issue. Thanks again guys!!!

What color is yours? yellow? If by some chance it is red, I know where you can get new seadoo decals on the side if you like the same ones I swapped out.

Nope ist yellow. But thanks for the offer.

Greg, the company that made them for me should be able to use that exact design and just change out the red for yellow. I will PM you.

very nice looking boat!
you'll see, when you're alone in the boat, it's a blast to drive. but even with 3 people it still takes off quite fast.

You should fix that fuel gauge quickly because this boat can be good on boat and gaz hog depending on how you drive it.

You'll have to try the submarine trick, it's just insane!

The guy I bought it from was told by the local Seadoo dealer that he could replace the sending unit in the fuel tank but it would just quit working again and that, that was common?? I guess if it really bothers me I'll have to do something about it. I just filled it up, we are taking it out tommorow for awhile :hurray: I did clean a wasp nest out of the blower so it works great now.

There are several threads on here where people have done the fix. It actually looks fairly easy. You can fix it yourself without replacing the entire sending unit. Search for the threads and I bet you can figure it out.

I will have to check that out. i can see how that could become quite annoying. :banghead:

Well took the boat out for about 4 hrs in Thursday. Ran great. The engines seem to need to have a lot of throttle to restart after floating awhile even after warmed up. I'm not sure if thats normal or not? Once they start they idle/run just fine. Other than that the boat worked great. With 3 people and 40 gallons of gas the boat GPSed 52mph. We drove all over the place and never really shut it off too much and I think I went thru about 25gallons of gas...ouch.

lol, we told ya they were loving gaz ;) But 52MPH GPS is quite fast. You'll see, the performance of the boat will make you forget the gaz bill.

as for cold start, with the choke they should start in 2-3 seconds if they ran the same day, 7-8 if they were not used for a long time. You might have floded them trying to start. Never give gaz, just use the choke. There's an acceleration pump on the carbs and when you give some gaz there's a big spray going in the engine. Also the engines don't stay warm very long. stop for 10 minutes and they're cold. Also when idling for a long period of time, they'll get cooler.

I was wondering if i just needed to choke them. ooops. Yes I was thinking that with just me in the boat and alot less gas in the tank, it is probably capable of a few more mph. Very happy with the boat overall. My 6 year old loves it and my wife likes it much more than our old 96 Speedster(and we know that counts for alot :willy_nilly: ).

same boat

Hey brother,
I just got the same boat, not many problems with mine. Had to replace the sparkplugs to fix an engine. I have found that it has a hard time pulling more than one tube at a time, have you experienced the same thing? Also has a lag in the lower part of the throtle, I have to "bump" the throtle a few times if I want to accelerate from a low speed quickly. Do you have the same probolem? Do you have any idea what it could be?

Jay...I can easily pull a tube with 3 people on it. The smaller engines might be a little harder though, but I doubt it. Stick with the basics. Make sure the fuel lines arent the grey lines. Any idea about prior maintenance? May need carbs redone. When you say you can bump the throttle and it works, what happens if you just push it full throttle? Does the engine stumble, or does it rev high RPM and doesnt go anywhere like it needs a minute to get going?
