Well took the head off...and this is what I found. The good new is I cant even feel a scratch in the Cyl walls. My question now is...what do I do about the dome on the head? Is it junk...I have a spare if I have to use it I was just hoping not to yet.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm surprised that didn't just die.

To be very honest... when people say they have a "Knock"... we never see internal damage.

OK... I guess the real question is... Is the crank still good? And is the RAVE still OK?

I don't know if what we are looking at is causing the knock. It's obvious that (from your last description) a hunk of the ring broke loose, and beat your piston and head. BUT... did a chunk get down into the crank, and damage the bearings.

I would remove the jugs (you will have to do that anyway for the new pistons) and remove the pistons... then you can hold the con rods, and spin the engine over. If it's smooth, then get a new piston, and rings... and slap it back together. If you feel any problems... it's time for a complete rebuild.

As far as the head... you could sand the rough edges off of it, and use it. But I would send it out, and have it cut... or buy a used head off of eBay.

Let me say this..... sanding the head, and putting one new piston, in an old cyl isn't the recommended way to do things... but if you want to ride this weekend... it should work.

Funny thing it was running like a champ LOL!! Soo here is some more pics. I have some questions..and Im sure I will have lots as I go along here. If there is pieces doing in the bottom end, how do I find out if there is any down there, and how do I get them out. Next question, how would I tell if the crank bearings are bad? I rotated it by hand and as far as I can tell it seems pretty good. As far as the knock noise I believe it was the piston bouncing around, it felt a little loose inside the jug compared to the other side. Also look at the last picture of my jugs on the table....see the black stuff on bottom left...what could that be from? Keep in mind that is the side of the good piston.

I would take the pistons off, and stick a finger into the wrist pin hole on each of the rods. Then, pump them, and just feel if everything is smooth. Seeing that the top lip of the piston came off... I would say that the rings went out the exhaust. IF... something is down into the lower half... you will have to remove the engine, and flush it out with a solvent.

I'm not sure where that came from... but that's exhaust splatter. Since your pipe is right there... I would check for a crack, or a leak in the ring.

If you crank feels good, and your bores measure good... I would get 2 new piston kits, and a top end gasket kit with a 0.4mm bas gasket, and put it back together. (give the cyl's a quick hone) And use your spare head.

I have a spair motor, with very low hours. Its locked up, but could I use the pistons out of that one...even the jugs look very good.

well after a can of penetrating lube, and a rubber mallet, I still cant get the jugs off the spare motor. So frustrated.

Don't get frustrated.....

Measure your good jugs. If they are round, and not beat up... just get a new set of pistons, and put it back together.

If they are out of spec, have them bored, and then, put it back together. (use your good head)

There may have not been anything wrong. Since the top lip came off of that piston, it could have just been a freak thing, and there may not be any other damage.

I will get some pics of the spare motor tonight. The inside walls look almost perfect. I swear I can still see the factory cross hatching in the walls...looks like whover had this ski before had almost no hours on it. If I where to guess I would say they took it out, and flipped it over. Then they could not get it restarted, so they let it sit. now its locked. I would atleast like to get the jugs and maybe the stator off of it. Im using the head from it on my ski.

OK I got the pistons off, and when I pulled the wrist pins out a bunch pf bearing fell out. Am I going to need those? None fell down the case..I'm glad I put rags in the wholes LOL!!!!

make sure the brass oil fitting, on the case, isnt clogged/locked up, on bad side cylinder. Theres a ball inside it. MIne did same thing, starved cylinder of oil.

Picture with black soot on outer cylinder, looks to me, you had an exhaust/air leak there between cylinder and base of case.

Picking up top end rebuild kit today. Supposed to come with all the gaskets and everything I need to get it back together. Maybe I should do a top end rebuild thread with pictures.

Cool!! I will do it, and Dr Honda can correct me as I go along LOL!!! I do have a quick question though. What oil should I use to lube the Cyl walls when I put in the pistons? I remember when I did my banshee rebuilds they wanted me to soak my rings in oil before I put them in. Is it the same situation here?

what the heck is the trick to getting the retainer clips in the side of the pistons.

There shouldn't be a trick if they are the right ones. Don't try to use the retainers from the SeaDoo pistons in the new pistons. They may be a different size. (wire gauge)

For a 2 stroke engine... just wipe your 2-stoke oil on the parts as it goes together. The only other thing I use is grease on seal lips.

yup, start'n my gtx project today, when i get my cylinders back....just wonderful...:willy_nilly:

I spent a couple of hours last night with my dremmel with a wire brush attachment and pretty much cleaning all the corrosion out of the heads and stuff.

should I use a anti seize on the cyl bolts? or thread lock. Dealer told me 20 ft lbs of torque on those.
