Just getting started....

Carbs...I am into doing things once. If you plan on keeping them a while I suggest getting OEM rebuild kits and OEM needles ad seats. Some people would just clean them...I like to fully rebuild them.

Where can I buy a OEM kit; I didn't see one on Seadoo Warehouse. Maybe I missed it?

sorry...any motorsports place/dealer should be able to order them. Get genuine...a lot of people say there is no difference, but there is.

Sometimes I wonder.......

OK, it's been one of those days....I go out this morning and manage to get both skis on the double trailer.

I get a phone call that we just lost anothet relative to cancer; my Mom on 1-17, an Uncle today....

There is nothing I can do until tomorrow so I continue with hose testing the '98 GXL; no leaks, everything is fine. I connect the quick connect nipple to the '00 GTI (that I've never ridden) and hit it with a little shot of starter fluid; pull the choke; it starts right up. I immediately reach over and connect the water. Water starts shooting backwards in the engine compartment and oil is dumping in the bottom of the hull faster than I could pour it out.... I disconnect the water & shut it down. There is a HUGE pool of oil in the hull. I got some degreaser and my pressure washer and clean up the mess.

I then managed to get the '00 over on the single so I can move it into my shop and access to all sides.

I guess I pull the engine and see what I can find?

Can we go back to 2010? Me and 2011 aren't getting along too well....

Dang man!!

Where did the oil come from is the first question, then the water. I would assume you have some hoses disconnected, or maybe rodent damage. I doubt the motor has to come out.

Just follow the oil and waterlines to where they hook up.

I have found the source of the water; a hose that connects to the underside of the engine (down by the starter) was not connected.....as for the oil....I haven't figured it out yet.

I stopped by Napa & picked up a roll of 1/4" black fuel line & some good zip ties. Next stop was a Powersports store & ordered a carb rebuild kit & a needle & seat; should be here next week.

Now back to the shop to look for the source of the oil.....

Yeah that oil one is weird...if it doesnt leak when its sitting, there should be no reason it would leak when it is running.

It gets even weirder (in my opinion). I turned it over a couple times last night; no oil leak. I hit it with a small shot of starting fluid, it ran for 2-3 seconds (with no water attached) and didn't leak any oil.

IMO
The oil line going to the lower engine block from the oil tank might have a crack in it around the fitting that goes into the block. When the engine warms up the crack expands and starts to leak. Possibly the fitting itself could be leaking. I would start it and let it run for a couple minutes then shut it off and reach under there with a rag a see if oil is present. Chances are, if the water line was not connected properly in a hard to reach place the oil line will be the same. Worth a look!!

P.S. Prayers go out to you and your family!

Thank you on all accounts.

I will check that Friday night and see what I can find.

'00 gti

Well, I rebuilt the carb last night for the most part; someone before me had stripped one of the small screws in the needle/seat area. I was able to replace the n/s. As everyone has said time & time again the Tempo lines were disintegrating and that was one of the biggest issues with the carb.

I replaced the fuel line, cleaned the selector and changed the in-line oil filter. It didn't start immediately so I hit it with a very small shot of starting fluid. It then started right up and I connected the hose and let it run for a minute while I looked for leaks in the hull; nothing...

I turned it off, disconnected the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Pushed the button and it started right up; reconnected the water and let it run for 2 minutes.

Next issue/concern: every time it has been started (prior to this) it has been with starting fluid. Every time there has been some smoke coming out of the back by the nozzle. It's always smelled like s/f so I thought it was related to that. Even without starting fluid there is smoke coming out of what I assume is a the exhaust tube vent. Also water comes out of the nozzle.

Any chance that this is normal? If not, what is the next step?

Thanks.

thats reg two stroke smoke. i just started my gts the other day after having had it fogged and lubed all winter and my neighbor called and asked if my house was on fire! lol so yes its normal:cheers:

Thanks!

And the water? That's normal too? If so, I'm happy now. I will have less than $200 (above the purchase price) in this ski and it seems all the issues are solved.

the water is the water that has run through tha motor to cool it. so all sounds good man. 717 motor are pretty simple and bulet proof if you keep them up and oiled. last year i rebuilt the 717 in my gts and they move pretty decently about 50 mph.

Sounds like your are ready to ride!! You did see that little filter in the carb and replace it? Was it filled with junk?

Howe, Texas...is that north of Dallas?
Where do you ride?

I'm originally from Canyon.
Go Lady Eagles 38-0 State Champs again!!!!!!

Yes sir; about an hour north. I've got my boat in a slip on Lake texoma over by a town called Gordonville. I'll use the skis there for the most part. My daughter-in-laws family has a lake house out on Possum Kingdom lake. I'm sure there will be a few trips out there as well.

Here's what I ended up with...the green one is actually a GTI but I cracked the wind deflector and I bought one off a GTX...
