Just bought a '97 sea doo gtx like new only 55 hrs on it seemed to run good when bought it but got it in the lake and it starts but won't stay running.. Can choke it and hold it half throttle to start it and feather throttle to somewhat keep it running but when u let out of the throttle it stalls.. Previous owner says it's probably bad gas.. By the way the gas tank is nearly full but noticed it was on reserve so I switched it to gas "on" and still same thing.. Please help!!!

Does it has the grey tempo gas line?

****EDIT***
I see that Adam beat me to it.

It could be partly bad gas.....what does it smell like?
If the fuel lines are gray you must change them to black auto lines 1/4", clean the carbs, I would add an in-line fuel filter too A Fram G2 works great. Replace the oil filter with OEM...about $8-$13.

What oil did the PO use?

Yes I'm changing them all out this evening.. And I wanna clean out the carbs can anyone walk me thru that.. Do I take the air box off and go in that way?

Yes, take all that crap off to get to the carbs. You might see some green goo in the old lines and at the carb filter. That gunk clogs up the fuel lines and make the motor run lean.

I'm not a carb person so wait until others answer.

I already drain the old gas out n cleaned tank and it ran decent for the few seconds I had it running but I still wanna get everything straightened out b4 I take the trip for another test hit

The old gas was horrible it looked like orange soda.. I'm not sure on the oil he just said he used 2 stroke oil from marina

it's best to use the oil type the original manual states to use. It should also be a sticker right near the oil cap on the ski.

I'd toss in some new spark plugs too... for $2/each it's a good thing to do. I change mine every spring, after the first tank. That way I can burn off all the fogging oil and stale fuel before putting in new ones.

The carbs need to removed and cleaned. No questions asked. If you replace the lines without going through the carbs you are still riding a ticking time bomb. The fuel selector must also be cleaned or replaced

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Went through the exact same thing with my GTX, worked fine for a while then same problem. Found it was the fuel selector knob, all gummed up, could not clean so replaced, problem solved....again

I was going to suggest that as well, and its an easy place to start, quick and easy access to the selector. Although generally speaking if the selector is gummed up you can probably assume the carb's are as well.

And to the OP, yes getting to the carbs through the airbox is a much less time consuming task than accessing the carbs through the manifold :) Although sometimes those stubborn clips on the bottom of the airbox make me want to go in a different way :)

The cables have adjusters attached to the carb on the mounting plate. (front carb). I remove the two Phillips (actually JIS) screws that mount this plate to the carbs. Then for the choke cable, I use a small 2mm metric allen wrench, and loosen the set screws that hold the cable in place to the carbs. The set screws are point toward the bottom of the ski and are on the brass pivot fitting. Just loosen them. Then you can open the carb up to full throttle with your hand and you should be able to slip the throttle cable out of the holder. I will post a picture in a minute. Now you can pull the choke cable out. I never even touch the adjusters. You also have to remove the oil pump cable. I also remove its cable mounting bracket from the back carb and then remove the cable out of the groove. Now you can take off the fuel and return lines, vacuum pulse line and the 4 mounting bolts and the carbs will come out together.

This picture is looking at the bottom (down side) of the front carb. Take off the bracket with the cable in it and leave the cables attached. The choke cable is already out but you can see the small set screw you need to loosen.

Yes. Are you sure they didn't fall off when you pulled the carbs? Only have gaskets between carbs and motor. Not between carbs and flame arrester. I never would have run (well) without the bottom gaskets.

Probably couldn get those at advance or napa right? My carbs were clean as could be.. No junk anywhere I'd say the bad gas was the problem or possible fuel selector I'm gonna check it later

It is not foam like you would think. It is a metal mesh screen that they call foam. Other than that, the air box is empty like his picture shows. Or maybe a 97 has foam but the 96 does not.
