The Saga continues!

I thought I had a deal set for this weekend but it fell through as the seller couldnt afford to pay the difference in sales price to pay-off so I'm back in the hunt!

I saw a boat a few weeks ago that I have re-ignited negotiations with the owner.

2008 Challenger 180SE
Wake Tower(OEM)
18 hours
Extended Warranty till 12/2012

Condition of boat is a 8 out of 10. I will have to go through the boat and detail the daylights out of it and get a few warranty items resolved.

The best he will go is $16,500.

Thoughts??

Craig

Sounds like a hell of a deal... the extended warranty would give me a ton of confidence in buying a 180SE (im actually looking around for a Texas 180). Of course your going to have the boat complete checked out, and do the routine stuff but pending on those results Id be all over the boat!

How many hours Craig? Sounds like a good deal, we were looking at an 08' SE w/ tower out of Nevada and they were looking for $18k.

18 hours on the boat.....Deal should be done this weekend.....I know you guys can't take this anymore. My good friend Jim needs therapy after putting up with me for the last couple of months!

I think Zach needs to fund half the therapy. He's partly responsible for me being boatless. And I'm not even going to start about the beaching incident!

Sounds like a good deal. I was just watching an 07 180 in Fort Lauderdale for 14,000 on ebay without a tower.

buy it! the time your spending looking you could be boating.do the work in the off season.

There's an off season in Florida? lol I wish I didn't have an off season. Looks and sounds like a good deal. The warranty definitely makes it worth it.

Okay...I am driving to work this morning and I looked over at one of my favorite golf course...being envious of the golfers on there...then it hits me!

I spot a tree with yellowing and oranging of the leaves!!! WTF..it is July!!!! High today is incredible 68!!! Al Gore, you better be hiding in that house in Tennessee!

Sounds like a good deal to me. I was just offered $18k on a trade-in for my 08 180 SE with 34 hours. $16 privately is pretty damn good (I didn't have an extended warranty either).

I know....

He sends me this today:

"Craig;

Ellen and I have talked many times about the sale of our boat. We will sell you the boat at $16,499 (a hard pill to swallow).

When you come to pick up the boat on Friday, please have cashiers check made out to William and Ellen XXXXX for $16,499. We will have a Bill of Sale made out to Craig XXXXXXX and signed by Ellen and I. You may take the boat out for a post sale drive and we will hold the check until you return. If you find something mechanically wrong with the boat and we all agree that this problem would void the sale, we will give you back your check and the sale will be voided.

As a consideration, if you want to bring your family, we will provide a wake board and rope and directions to the ramp and local waters. My thought is that you are taking the day off, you might as well enjoy the day, the boat, the area and all that goes with it.

Friday after lunch will be a good time for me; the boat and paper work will be ready for you.

You have done a great job in your research and negotiations; now enjoy the fruits of your labors.

v/r,

Bill"

Does this sound fishy?? I replied back that we can add this to the terms and conditions of the Bill Of Sale. What do you guys think?

Craig

i'll believe it when i see it. :willy_nilly:

Sea trial

Some sellers wish to avoid joy riders, or to have the deal renegotiated in the driveway because of perceived flaws in the boat. I wold list - in general terms - what would void the sale...

In my search I am asking for a sea trial and mech inspection (at my expense). A good faith non refundable deposit might go aways in avoiding handing over $16k and then having to negotiate it back.

There also are escrow services available - would a local bank do that?

And of course it all comes down to trust... Some people still stand behind a solid hand shake.

Whoa, That’s way to fishy for me. I would tell the guy its a hard pill to swallow handing someone 16k for a toy without a test drive. plus his wording on refunding you your money if you perceive something wrong. He has to agree and think the problem is a deal breaker witch he wont. He already thinks the boat is in top shape. Any problem that occurs on your test ride he would say you caused and you already own the boat. Personally I would not buy a used boat from an individual with out a test drive. With the owner not wanting you to test the boat before handing him the money makes me think the owner is hiding something.

he probably feels he is being fair to you. i would say you would rather test the boat together and then finish the paperwork.some people have poor social skills thats why they just go to dealers.

I would not have the stones to try and sell any of my boats, cars, motorcycles without allowing a testdrive.

he deffinatly needs to go with you! 1 thing that can be going on is that he doesnt wnt to go on a sea trial with you and at the same time doesnt want to loan his boat to drive without cash in hand.. in my world there are no money orders, wire transfers, nor cashiers checks. only cash and personnal checks ( and paypal). and if it s personnel check. then you can be sure there is 2 people going to the bank together to cash it. then the paperwork is signed.

its just like baldy said. maybe theres somthing wrong he knows about that he thinks your gona find in the test drive. then whammi! no refunds! i hope you are a good people person and can read people easily. when you meet the dude, if hes got that "lickin his eyebrows" attitude. push the abort button and be happy with the decision you made. but if hes willing to play by your rules or at least willing to meet you half way but with a resonable excuse as to why not then its your own judgment.

i meant the seller may have good intentions but little experience in private party deals.so offer another option.craig must be very good at negotiating or he would not have gotten such a great deal on his utopia.

Craig - this is BS. Don't go for that. I don't know if I would buy this boat now without a full inspection by a mechanic first based on that email. Smells a bit like he has something to hide. At the very least, I would not hand over ANY money until after a test drive and inspection by yourself.

:agree: But the guy wont be playing by craigs rules. He would be playing by the official rules for private party transactions. And 100% he needs to be on the boat with you for the test drive. The guy owns the boat it is not unresonable for him to take out for one last spin.

Guys,

You all nailed it for the most part.

I called him earlier and tactfully covered the situation. I asked him respectfully "Would you ever buy a car without test driving it first?" His answer was "No". I asked him if he could express to me his concerns so I could understand. Basically there is some sellers remorse going on. He's a little irritated that he has to sell the boat for less than he originally wanted. He in turn wanted the terms to be on his terms. I asked him again what was the issue with a sea trial prior to transaction? He said he did not want to deal with either me just not liking the boat itself and wasting his time or trying to re-negotiate after the Sea trial. After about 10 minutes of me expressing my concerns and his concerns things softened and I offered a possible solution. I said, Would you agree to a $500 cash Non-refundable deposit(only refundable if the boat does not perform to Seadoo Specifications)? If the Sea trial goes fine I give him the check and we both depart as friends. If the boat has issues I get my deposit back and we part friends. If I dont like the color of the boat he keeps the $500.......He agreed.

You guys were all right, there were alot of dynamics going on here and once we sifted through the real issues on both sides we created a mutually agreeable solution.

Boat buy is back on.

Craig
