help with my 96xp

hey guys i just picked up a set of 96 seadoo xps, got a good deal on them and the trailer, one starts right up and runs like a topp, love the speed and handling on it. that being said the other wont, the guy said he thinks its the soliniod, and he put a new starter on the other day. he was a very honest guy, gave me all the paper work and things done to them, he took good care of them and told me anything i wanted to know, well i got to the lake and rode one for a while and it did awsome so i pulled the soliniod out and threw it in the other and it still just clicked like it did before, also has a new battery b4 anyone ask that lol, well i threw the old soliniod in the ski that was working and sure enough it didnt start so soliniod must be bad, but not what is keeping it from starting so i pulled the starter relay out of the working ski and put it in the other so now it has the starter relay and the soliniod from the working ski and it still just clicked so i tried the old relay in the ski that workd and it fired up so now i got 2 good relays and 1 good soliniod, now with all the good parts in the one that wont fire i looked at the starter, brand new and shiny black like he said i seen the ground was in a dif spot on this one than the one that works it was on the top bolt of the starter, so i moved it to the bottom bolt and still nothing, i see on the other one it was on that little ear that sticks off i did not try it there because i dont have a bolt to fit, does it matter where it is grounded? k so i felt were he had the positive wire going and it was the same as the other only i noticed the threaded prong was wiggly, i made sure it was on there tight and it felt hot to me too, so that being said i think its a crappy starter i called the guy and said were did you get the starter he said it was new on ebay for 60 shipped so it could just be a cheapo, but he got it, he swears to me it was working great b4 that starting issue and its in very clean shape so i am thinking about ordering a new starter and soliniod and i am hoping that fixes it, is the starter easy to install or should i take it to a shop? thanks any ideas please tell me sorry its so long wanted to give all the details

i ordered my soliniod now, but i still need to figure what i want to do about the starter either order a brand new one and try it myself or i might just throw the soliniod in and then take it to the shop and say the soliniod is new and relay works, so throw a new starter in lol

i've seen those starter crap out, within a few times of the start/stop button, being depressed.

Your throw'n me off bud, with "starter relay" and "solenoid". Those parts are referred to, as 1 unit....so thinking you mean, starter relay and coil/ignition coil? Anyway, with the starter post being loose, it caused way to much resistence, got the coils hot inside starter, and now, doesnt work. For peace of mind, pull the plugs out, and spin the motor, make sure, its not "that".

You may have the cables reversed, on the solenoid. Use a voltmeter on battery, then while cranking.
12.5v no load = 10.5 while cranking the engine.

I had the exact situation and it turned out the ground cable had corrosion from within the cables sheathing. couldn't see it until we cut it apart. make sure all the grounding ends and bolt ground points are super clean.
