Hey gang, new here but, not to the marine industry. I own a '94 seadoo xp, which I bought from my work place several years back and was/is my first PWC. Also, picked up a '96 GSX 787 from work, that was in the junk pile. Where I work, we are a Yamaha water sports dealer so, they really don't get into selling old seadoo's that need work. Anywho, just joined to keep up with fell'r seadoo enthusiasts and learn/ share some info.

About my doo's. The '94 is all stock and love the x4 hull. But, it needs upgrades. Mainly with handling and gripping the water. Here on lake simcoe, the water is mostly choppy and this machine keeps unloading. I want to doo the grate and trim upgrades that I have read about but, not sure if I want to upgrade to a newer xp or spx. I guess, I could do the upgrades and if I find a newer machine, just swap the aftermarket stuff over. Other than that, It runs good and is reliable.

Now, the GSX I just got, needs love. The machine came available because, the original owner cant be tracked down and it ended up in the scrap pile. So, it was running, winterized and stored in our yard, according to records. This was also 7 years ago. So, with that said, the bilge is very clean and in nice shape but, the exterior needs love, due to sun damage. The hull looks like it will buff out real nice but, the plastic pieces and seat need to be replaced. Other than that, I need to get the machine inside and start going through the engine. Need to drain and clean the fuel tank, replace fuel lines and go through the oil injection.

Anywho, I think that about covers it lol. Will try to post pics at another time! Right now, going to browse the forum a little bit :coolgleam:

Welcome aboard...

There are grates that will help load the pump in ruff or choppy water. One thing to consider is, that many of the same grates will actually slow you down in smooth calm water. But,,, you will gain performance in regards to steering. So, if you are mostly in choppy water get a top load grate.

Hard plastic can be brought back to like new condition doing the hear gun trick. I don't think it works on soft plastic such as a seat.

Thanks for the welcome! For the XP, I want something that is in between. As it sits, I hardly reach top speed anyway lol. But, after reading reviews on here, looks like I will end up with a top loader. Just need to decide what to get. Most guys say worx is a great product but, I have a local distributor for solas. We shall see.

As for the GSX, I may try the suggested heat gun trick. I would like to add the mirrors to the hood too, just to change up the look. As for the seat, I agree, its toast. Looks like I am going to get a skin from hydro-turf, along with the foot well mat.

The XP is in storage, so wont do anything till spring but, I have the GSX at home and will spend the winter bringing it back to life!

Welcome to the forum, sounds like you got your work cut out for yourself. The gsx will buff up nice, the white can be tough to get really white but can be wet sanded out then buffed. You can check out my lasts winters projects in my sig line that I wet sanded, it's my HX.

Not too often you see a 2 door Marquis. I always think someone shortened them. Nice set up!

Welcome aboard. Always good to see another Canuck join. I go through your town about 20 times in the summer to get to the cottage, along with a couple hockey tournaments for the kids.

Sounds like you got a couple good projects on the go. On the plastic, the heat gun will work, you can also try cleaning them up with some laquer thinner and hit with some Wipe New it works well.

Thanks. I just went through your HX thread. The GSX project looks more promising now! It looks just how yours did. Rips in the seats and all. Guess I will have to get that zippo fluid too lol. Also, That's my old Lincoln mark VI. Sold this spring to cut down on vehicles lol. I do however have a '81 marquis brougham coupe. Did a full resto and powertrain up grade on it not long ago.

Looks like there is a few of us on here. Nice to see some local people too. I work in the little town of lefroy. My boss actually is a hockey coach for younger kids.

Does the paint thinner do a similar job as the lighter fluid. Maybe use wipe new after? I bought a box of wipe new for my town car, to do the lower trim. Worked well but, still unclear on what it does lol

I like the laquer thinner just to take all the oils and dirt off the plastic and it leaves no residue like paint thinner. (Actually a tip I got from racerxxxx) Apply the Wipe New and it makes the plastic look like it was just armor alled but does not go away. Here is a before and after from last spring, virtually still looks the same today, so far so good for the wipe new

Yup we got lots of great tricks...love that wipe new.

Welcome to the best seadoo site out there! If there is anything I can help you with just let me know.

Right on man! Oh and I am going to PM you, once I get this GSX running and know its all good. Am interested in some parts!

So, I have been doing research on intake grates for the X4 and according to you guys, the R&D and worx grates are the way to go. My question is this though, for a little 650 xp, is the worx grate still superior? The prices seem close but, wont go over kill if I don't have to. Looks like the R&D one is a pretty good product.

Well, just placed an order for hydro-turf. Got the foot well grip for both machines and a seat cover for the GSX. The black Friday promo code helped pretty much cover shipping to Canada.

Nice the turf is a huge upgrade.

On the intake grate, Jet dynamics are considered about the best. They all dig into the water and keep the pump hooked a little better. They usually scrub a mph or two off the top in favor of that "grip".

I do have a few intake grates, just hit me up.

Ok thanks! I know I want and need one for the XP. It blows big time on our lake because, of the choppy water. I may just get a solas one for the GSX, since the original one is in bad shape and I don't feel like removing it, just to refinish/paint it lol.

I was able to bring the hood back to life with some petroleum jelly. I am curious to see how long it lasts. But, big difference. The handle bar plastics are too damaged to be brought back so, Installed better ones from a yellow GTI. I really am liking the yellow and purple theme. Also, after replacing the missing electrical parts, I was able to power up the info center and roll the engine over. Has only 120 hours on it and strong compression :)

I wish I could dig out my XP from the storage barn and work on it but, don't want to run my trailer through the salty roads. It needs a clean up in the bilge. Since the bilge is very clean on the GSX, a dirty engine in the XP is unacceptable lol.

w00t! Just got my order from hydro-turf. Traction mats for both machines and a seat cover for the GSX. Time to do some seat work!

I sure hope so. At this point, it seems like dirty carbs will be the only major thing to happen. Other than that, all the GSX needs, is a steering cable. Did a lot of buffing to the gel coat and it has come a long way. It has a nice shine to it now. But now, I will concentrate my time on the seat, since the machine has to be outside for a bit.

Seats are a lot more work than people think. Personally I hate doing them but boy so they look good with new turf and seat covers. I have the steering cable if you are looking for one.

My parents have experience with upholstery. So, I think we will be able to do a good install of the seat cover. Only thing that sucks is, the foam is damaged in the usual spot. Going to have to repair it. I hope the seat cover I put together looks good on the machine.

Do you have a new cable? Or is it used?

Used freshwater good shape. Make sure to use stainless staples on the seat

Finally got around to snapping some pics of the GSX. It has come a long way from what it was. It runs, the deck and hull have been restored(compound and wax), new HT seat skin and mats installed.
