just picked up my ski and i have not yet had it in the water but have gone over it and found there is a fair bit of movement in the handle bars (up and down movement) would this possibly be a bearing? what do u guys think?

No bearings that I'm aware of. You don't mention the type ski you have, but for the most part, the steering assemblies are cast pieces like the steering support, steering stem and support arm, along with the rest of it's hardware. The support itself sounds like it's been warn pretty hard. When assembled, synthetic grease is used in the two areas the support and stem come together.

If your having radial movement at your handlebar (not the radial of turning, but up and down movement), then the support and stem will need to be inspected. In the long run, best just left like it is till it's worn out because without bearings, replacement is the only thing you can really do for it.

I replaced the steering support in my 02 XP, boy was that fun (NOT).

Anyway, I used green synthetic waterproof grease with it. Now it's 100x easier to turn left right and I have MUCH less free play in it.

I man-handle my ski a lot, which is where I'm guessing the free play comes from. it was a $160 part I think, not cheap, but may be less on yours. If your like me and free play like that bothers you, don't go used to save $... it's not worth it.

get the part # there, then google it to find sellers.

There are two cheap plastic bushings that cause that play. Not a super fun job but its doable.

I see the problem though...the mircofiche doesnt show them separate on the GTX/GSX microfiche.

I will have to go out and check some parts, but I'm fairly sure they are the same bushings as the X-4 has. Heres the 'fiche

#68, 69 (which is obsolete)

Or...hunt down A UMI kit which has bearings.

Thats why I was trying to zero in on the parts fiche. Looking at it, it seems this one is the type that is designed into the support itself. He also doesn't state what ski, just that its a 2005. So, I looked at the RXP. The steering supports are different between models, though many are designed the same. But, on the older ones, yeah... PITA to work with.
