GSX intake grate

Getting ready in my mind for the spring thaw and riding! Our lake is pretty choppy. The GTX handles it pretty well, but the GSX likes to suck lots of air in the chop. I was thinking that a new intake grate would help this. Thoughts? Looking at a Solas Intake Grate GTX-IG-B.

I have the Solas top loader grate on my xp. I love it, keeps the ski hooked up well in chop. You might lose 1 mph off top end

I've also found the GSX likes to porpoise a LOT.

Another guy on this forum used a home made VTS rod, which was longer, to push the nozzle down even more, which forces the front of the GSX down.

Interesting. Ive noticed alot of porpoising on my gsx as well

Top loader grate will help with the over-all performance in choppy water. And, chances are you will lose no top end speed in the chop as you are gaining a loaded impeller as compared to your normal.

If you get a wedge, it will angle the jet down more and will help with the porpoising. I think once you get to 2.5 degree or lager wedge you will need to get a steering extension or at the very least adjust yours to the max of the adjustment.

With two on the GSX, even flat water is up, down, up, down, up, down. Throw up. Up down, up down.

If the trim isn't full down, your bobbing.

It's a wicked fun ski, just likes to bounce.

Yep it is a fun one for sure. I don't mind the bounce that much, but want to keep as much water coming into the pump as I can. I hate having to blip the throttle all the time.

So do any of you ski hoarders/ parters out there have a nice top loader grate for a 96 GSX sitting around gathering dust that you may want to part with??? Figure I will check here first before I head off to Amazon or EBay.

I have a brand new in the box one. Ordered it for my 09 RXT-X and never installed it. Let me find it and see if it fits yours. I also ordered a 3 degree wedge, steering extender and impeller, never used them. All brand new.

I have an R&D intake grate on my 96GSX, I think it works pretty well, at least compared to stock, and I have not noticed any loss on the top end. They are pretty common, Ebay, and I bet Nick [MENTION=41828]Minnetonka4me[/MENTION] also has a few on hand.

Well I just scored a new grate. It is a westcoast "dovetail" grate. I snagged it for $40 off craigslist. The puppy is new! The guy bought it for GTX ME and it didn't fit. I will post back after I test it.

Well as promised, I am reporting back on the grate. I love it! We spent a week at Smith Mountain Lake in VA. The lake is large (by standards around here) and gets choppy in the main areas. Last year the GSX struggled to keep water in the inlet in the chop so it was bouncing on the rev limiter constantly. The new grate keeps it hooked up and pumping. I did not see much change in top end, but did not GPS it. Turns great and it just makes a great ski even better. Trim down in the chop and it keeps up well with the GTX, although you still need to be "up on the pegs" more. Also works perfect on the long glassy sections and the ski turns like a beast. The only minor issue I had was I found a hickory nut stuck in the wedge of the "tooth". Didn't notice performance issue, but it could catch things I guess. Best $40 I have spent on the ski! :thumbsup:
