Hey guys, just picked up a 1998 (I think) Speedster today for $600. It needs some work for sure. As you can see the interior is fairly well trashed, it's pretty dirty, and from what I was told only one engine runs. Apparently, the other one may have a bent driveshaft, but I am not for sure yet. The hull is in pretty good shape, some of the gelcoat on the top has started to come off, but the underside looks really good. Figured for 600 bucks it was a fairly decent deal. Anyways, I'm going to try to get it ready to use before summer ends, and I'm sure I will be asking for tons of advice as this is my first boat and my first Seadoo.

Good deal. You can have a nice boat for a fair price when you are done. I dont think its a 98 speedster though. Thats what I have and it looks different Some of the other guys on here know the years and models much better and I am sure they will chime in.

I haven't looked at the HIN to check and see, so I honestly don't know. I do know it has the 717 engines though. The guy I got it from is a buddy of mine's cousin. Apparently he had gotten it a long time ago from some guy to fix it then the guy just told him he could have it. He says he replaced a few parts on the engines, to include some electronics, but not sure what all he did to it. I guess he never got around to fixing it, so he just wanted to get rid of it. Doesn't have a title, but that's easy to fix.

Speaking of, where is the HIN? Back of the hull I assume?

the boat in my avatar was as bad as your boat. A little elbow grease, and love... and it will be a runner a again.

Good to hear that it can be brought back to look as good as yours, Doc. I was a little concerned about the extreme oxidation and fading of the yellow parts around the helm area. However, after doing some searching, I found that apparently you can paint the vinyl pieces with quite a bit of success. I had no idea that was possible. I will probably change the colors from yellow/grey to something a little more "modern".

I've been pricing some of the parts I KNOW that I need, like the moulding, a couple latches (which are EXPENSIVE btw), Hydro-Turf, and so on. Including a driveshaft which is the most expensive part, I'm only up to a hair over $500. Much better than I was anticipating. Now provided I don't run into super expensive repairs on the engines I should be doing pretty well.

Yes sir, even had a pouch of Red Man chew in one compartment. Figured with that thrown in it was a pretty good deal haha.

Just took it to a spray and wash, got about 95% of all the dirt and oxidation off. Starting to look better. Will take some elbow grease and patience to get the rest of it. I will try to remember to take pictures throughout its rebirth if anyone cares to see.
