Hi Guys
I'm hoping I can be a resource here once I learn some stuff. I'm lacking at the moment and appreciate your time helping me.
I had two 1990 SP's. One was seized up. The other I kept. The gas was used and dirty so I bought a rebuild kit and had a friend clean it. I put it on and started it. It ran perfect. After that I thought I'd do a test in the water. At the lake it wouldn't start. I discovered the take was filthy. So I've flushed the tank, new lines, new filter. What happens is when I press the throttle it starts sputtering and there is alot of blue smoke. During idle it runs rather well for a 20 year old engine. I'm not sure how to check for spark so I connected an inductive timing light to the spark plugs. When I press the throttle about 1/4 of the way, during the sputtering, the timing light stops lighting telling me the spark is quitting.
When I unplug the rev limiter, the spark does not go out, but still runs rough. I've swapped most of the electronics from the other ski before getting rid of it. I haven't touched anything behind the flywheel because I don't have the tools for that.
What I'm wondering is my problem related to the ignition, or is it a fuel problem? I'm not a major mechanic but these motors are pretty simple.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
